With phone screens getting bigger and better and processors getting faster, it’s a miracle that battery life is growing at all. So, to keep you from spending your life plugged into a wall, the likes of Samsung and Motorola have worked on charging their phones faster.
Samsung says the Galaxy Note 4 can charge from flat to 50 per cent in just half an hour. While Motorola has said that the Nexus 6 can be used for six hours after a 15 minute charge. But how does that compare to other phones?
We looked at how long it takes phones to charge from flat to 100 per cent* and how long the battery should then last with light use** – that’s half an hour of calls/texts, 90 minutes of internet browsing and half an hour of videos/gaming each day. That way, we could see which phone gives you the most use if you only have 15 minutes spare to charge it.
1. SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 4
The Galaxy Note 4 has a huge 3,220mAh battery, but it only takes 95 minutes to charge completely. And with light use, a full battery should last around 81 hours. That means a 15 minute charge could last 12 hours 45 minutes.
2. NEXUS 6
Like the Note 4, the Nexus 6 has a 3,220mAh battery, and it only takes 98 minutes to charge. But the extra screen size makes it use a little more battery. So a 15 minute charge will give you almost 12 hours of light use.
3. SAMSUNG GALAXY S5
The Galaxy S5 takes just over two hours to fully charge its 2,800mAh battery. And should then go 70 hours before needing to plug in again. So a quick 15 minute charge should last around eight and a half hours.
4. SAMSUNG GALAXY K ZOOM
Samsung’s camera-centric phone, the K Zoom, charges in just two hours. And its 2,430mAh battery should then last around 65 hours with light use. So we think a 15 minute charge could give you about eight hours.
5. LG G3
The LG G3 charges it’s big 3,000mAh battery in an impressive two hours flat. And as a full battery will last up to 64 hours, a 15 minute charge should last eight hours with light use.
6. SAMSUNG GALAXY ALPHA
The Galaxy Alpha has a relatively small 1,860mAh battery, so it charges in under two hours and lasts up to 52 hours. That means a 15 minute charge should give about seven and a quarter hours of light use.
7. SONY XPERIA Z2
The Xperia Z2 takes three and a half hours to fully charge its big 3,200mAh battery. But it’s super-efficient, so should last a massive 87 hours between charges. That efficiency will let a 15 minute charge last a little over six hours.
8. NOKIA LUMIA 635
To fully recharge the Lumia 635’s 1,830mAh battery, you’ll need a spare two and half hours. But that will give you up to 65 hours of light use. So a 15 minute charge should last around 6 hours.
9. SONY XPERIA Z3
The Xperia Z3 would take almost four hours to charge the 3,100mAh battery from flat to full. But because Sony makes their phones so efficient, it’ll last for up to 84 hours between charges. That means a 15 minute charge can last up to five hours and twenty minutes.
10. SONY XPERIA T3
It’ll take about three and half hours to fully charge the 2,500mAh battery in the Xperia T3. And once it’s fully charged, it can last up to 73 hours. So a 15 minute charge should give about 5 hours and 10 minutes of light use.
