Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review

The mini phone is all the rage right now, and the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact might be the best yet.
Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is probably the best of the ‘mini’ phones around right now. Made from metal, waterproof, and definitely the fastest of the ‘mini’ phones, only look somewhere else if you want something more budget.

The Z1 Compact is a mini sized version of theSony Xperia Z1, and it’s a real looker. The metal frame is well made, and the 4.3” screen much easier to use. This is the most premium of the mini phones out right now, and it’s even waterproof.

The 20.7MP camera on the back is the same as the Xperia Z1, and it’s a really good camera. The auto mode is easy and simple, and the manual mode picks up a stunning amount of detail. There’s also fun modes and effects, making it one of the most complete cameras available.

We love the screen on the Compact because it’s sharp and has good colours, but the processor is the real standout. The processor is what makes the phone work, like an engine in a car. The processor is one of the fastest around, and is phenomenally powerful compared to other phones. It makes the Z1 Compact the best mini phone for gaming and apps because it’s easily the fastest.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact comes with Office Suite 7 which is for opening and editing all sorts of Microsoft Office documents. The next word prediction on the keyboard is also really accurate on the Compact, and the swipe keyboard, that lets you drag our finger to the letters that make up the words you want to type, was really good and fast.

Sony managed to squeeze a pretty big battery in the Z1 Compact, and it’s the best battery performer in the mini category. The Battery STAMINA mode extends this even further by closing down apps and suspending internet connections when the screen’s off.

Something we found really good was the Xperia Transfer app, which made it easy to transfer content and apps from your old phone to a new Z1 Compact. There’s a little adaptor in the box for connecting to your old phone, even an iPhone. And if your old apps are on iTunes, the app finds equivalents in the Google Play Store for Android, and will even give you vouchers for paid ones.

Let’s look back at the camera. Apart from good photos, we loved the AR effect. It’s great fun, letting you superimpose dinosaurs and funny hats and more into the photos you’re taking. For entertaining kids or making fun of your friends at the pub it’s brilliant.
