Everyone enjoys escaping into a computer game for a while. But too often we’re interrupted by someone who wants to watch the TV. That’s why we were so excited when Sony announced PS4 Remote Play for the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Tablet Z3 Compact. And now that the app has been finished and released, we’ve been able to test how it works with Sony’s top smartphone.
WHAT IS PS4 REMOTE PLAY?
The new app lets you play your PlayStation 4 games on your smartphone or tablet, so you can leave the TV free for someone else. It even lets you continue a paused game, so if you have to give up the TV mid-game, you don’t lose your progress.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
There are three things you need: a PlayStation 4, a DualShock 4 controller (that’s the one that comes with the PS4) and a Sony Xperia Z3 phone or tablet, although we’ve heard rumours that the app will come to more Xperia devices eventually.
The phone and games console talk to each other through Wi-Fi, so you need to make sure they’re both connected to the same network. Then you just need to download the PS4 Remote Play app from the Google Play Store. This puts a new Remote Play button in the PlayStation app that came on your phone so it’s just one tap to start gaming on your mobile.
Once you’ve installed PS4 Remote Play, you need to make sure you’ve signed into the PlayStation app with the same Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) account that you use on your console. Then hit that new Remote Play button.
HOW GOOD IS THE GAMING?
Really good. You still use the normal DualShock 4 controller, so there’s no problem with playing games like there would be if you had to use on-screen buttons. And everything runs really smoothly on the phone thanks to its quick processor.
It also looks like PS4 Remote Play makes the most of the high res screen. Everything looks super sharp with great colours, which is fantastic because the new games for the PS4 have incredible graphics and deserve to be seen in HD.
We really like the way this new tech works. It makes it even easier to play the latest games. And we love having the freedom to play a game anywhere in the house.
