Thinking of upgrading from the S7 edge to the S8/S8+?
Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ vs S7 edge

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is here, along with a bigger version known as the S8+. We know a lot of you are interested in how these latest Galaxys compare with the S7 edge. So to help you out, here’s our S8/S8+ v S7 edge showdown…

Design and display

At first glance, the S8 and S7 edge have a similar look and shape. The S8 is now much more refined though. It’s got rounder corners and virtually no bezels, and the stunning edge-to-edge infinity display really has to be seen to believed. It measures 5.8-inches on the S8, and a massive 6.2-inches on the S8+.

The infinity display is the standout feature on the S8, and even the fantastic curved display on the S7 edge can’t compare with it.

Camera showdown

The S7 edge’s Dual Pixel 12MP camera is still one of the best ever fitted to a phone, and Samsung has stuck with the same sensor for the S8. There is a major difference between the two though – the S8 uses multi-frame processing, so it actually takes three shots for each image. This reduces blurring and makes your photos pin-sharp.

The S8’s selfie camera is now 8MP compared with the 5MPs on the S7 edge. And once again, there’s lot of brand new technology on board. This is one of the first front-facing camera with inbuilt autofocus, and it’s got a great new low-light lens. If that wasn’t enough, you’ve got lots of new filters and stickers to play with.

Under the hood

If we take a look under the hood, then the S8 has even more to shout about.

It’s powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 835 processor, which is a real step forward from the quad-core Snapdragon 820 processor on the S7.

There’s a 3,000mAh battery, which Samsung says will see you through the day thanks to the processor being more efficient. And unlike the S7 edge, the S8 now has speedy USB Type-C charging technology. So when you do run out of juice, you’ll be able to quickly get back up to speed.

The S8 also boasts an extra security feature. In addition to the fingerprint scanner on the rear, there’s now an intelligent iris scanner round the front - making sure no-one but you can get into your new pride and joy.

Our verdict

The S7 edge is now a year old, and that’s a long time in the mobile world. So while it remains a great phone, the S8 really is a significant improvement. It’s an incredible new phone packed with the latest state-of-the-art technology, and that infinity display makes it a real head-turner.
