HTC U11: First look

‘Squeezable’ phone revealed by HTC

HTC continues its U range with a brand new smartphone – the U11. The 2017 Android-powered flagship device, codenamed Ocean, is a world-first featuring ‘squeezable’ sides. The unique function is designed to let you interact with the phone without having to touch its display at all.

A new look

When it comes to design, the handset features what HTC calls a ‘liquid surface’. By layering glass and reflective minerals, the back of the phone will appear to show off different colours when in bright light. HTC says: “The result is poetry in motion as the handset reflects and transforms light with every movement you make.”

On the front there’s a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, which is quickly becoming the standard size for smartphones nowadays. And the screen’s glass wraps right around the phone on all sides, meeting the metal frame that holds it all together.

Two awesome cameras

On the back of the phone there’s a 12MP UltraPixel camera, with all the usual bells and whistles you’d come to expect from HTC. The large pixels absorb loads of light, making for bright and accurate photos, and there are a bunch of creative apps and features - but don't just take out word for it. The industry standard for cameras and lenses, DxOMark, has listed the U11 as the best mobile camera available today, knocking Google Pixel off the top spot.

Round the front, there’s a 16MP lens for super selfies - this is where the squeezie Edge Sense™ tech come into its own. Applying pressure to the frame lets you complete a customisable task on the phone. So, for example you can squeeze once to launch the camera, and again to capture a selfie.

This means there’s no more awkward fumbling to get your finger over the on-screen button – just squeeze, and you’re good to go.

As we said above, Edge Sense can be customised to suit how you use your phone. A few examples include turning the torch on and off, answering a phone call, and summoning Google Assistant.

Under the hood

The U11’s impressive features aren’t just skin-deep. Powering the smartphone is the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, backed up by 4GB RAM. Given the powerful chip, we’re pretty confident in saying you won’t be slowed down with even the most demanding of games on this smartphone.

There’s also a 3,000mAh battery, to make sure you can stay powered up all day long. And there’s 64GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 2TB with a microSD card.

We’ll be spending some more time with the HTC U11 very soon, so make sure you look out for our hands on. In the meantime, if you like the sound of the squeezie smartphone, follow this link to be taken through to Carphone Warehouse’s website. We won’t be beaten on price.
