Will wide-angle lenses kill the selfie stick?

Will wide-angled smartphones cameras ever be the death of the selfie stick?

Will wide-angle lenses kill the selfie stick?

Is it time to ditch your selfie stick?

Love them or hate them, selfie sticks are slowly becoming engrained within today’s society. Walking through any tourist hotspot now means ducking and dodging poles and crowds to avoid accidentally photo-bombing oblivious groups, awkwardly immortalising their trip to Trafalgar Square.

But with smartphone manufacturers now introducing wider-angled front-facing lenses, will we start to see a drop off in the fad? Keith Lemon has kindly modeled for us in this experiment, as we've used the front-facing lenses of some of our favourite Android-powered smartphones.

All photos were taken from the same spot, using the same default settings, and nothing has been cropped or edited.

Sony Xperia Z3+

  • Main camera: 20.7MP
  • Front-facing camera: 5MP
  • Angle: 25mm

Samsung Galaxy S6

  • Main camera: 16MP
  • Front-facing camera: 5MP
  • Angle: 28mm

LG G4

  • Main camera: 16MP
  • Front-facing camera: 8MP
  • Angle: Estimated 27mm

HTC One M9

  • Main camera: 20MP
  • Front-facing camera: 4MP UltraPixel
  • Angle: 26.8mm

As you can see, a lot of these smartphones’ front-facing lenses are now heading towards the 30mm mark. To put this in layman’s terms, this basically means you don’t have to hold the phone as far away from you to fit more in the frame.

Although they might not be quite on the level of fisheye (or ultra wide-angle) lenses, which can produce almost panoramic shots, these selfie cams are heading in the right direction. It’s amazing how long it’s taken for front-facing cameras to begin to progress when compared to the main, rear cameras, but now we’re starting to see a significant improvement.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is clearly leading the pack at the moment, which is reflected in the stats, but this big leap to a selfie stick-less world won’t happen over night. If things keep moving at the rate they are now however, we could see the back of the tourist’s favourite accessory within a few short years.
