What to expect from the next Samsung

The next Samsung is coming soon, and we’re awaiting its arrival with bated breath. There are a lot of rumours doing the rounds right now, so we’ve brought some of them together here. Remember, these are just rumours, so not all of them might happen – we’ll just have to wait and see when the phone is launched officially. Speaking of which…

Release date

“Thursday, August 9 is the official launch date, with the announcement happening in Brooklyn, New York City… In terms of when the phone will actually go on sale, currently we expect the release date to be late August, with pre-orders opening either on the day of the launch event, or shortly after. However, we're yet to hear any firm rumours on this.” Tech Radar

“The device, according to another renowned tipster, will ship with a 6.4-inch screen, outshining the 6.1.-inch screen on the Galaxy Note 8.” Trusted Reviews

“Like the Galaxy Note 8, you can expect to find a big screen featuring an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. There's no telling yet, however, exactly how big that display will be, though initial rumblings…point to a 6.4-inch screen.” Tom’s Guide

“There's been plenty of talk that the phone will be the first major handset to embed a fingerprint reader under the screen, which would certainly be a coup and free up some space on the back of the device, too. This is by no means confirmed, though.” T3

“Despite reports that the screen glass is fractionally thinner the chassis is expected to increase very slightly. It will be 0.2mm thicker and 1.3mm wider than the Note 8, likely to accommodate for a slightly larger screen and higher-capacity battery, which will also make it a bit heavier as confirmed by the firs hands-on review. A 1.1mm reduction in height suggests further slimming down of the top and bottom bezels, but both will remain.” Tech Advisor

“The firm has made a number of cosmetic changes, though. For starters, it’s repositioned the fingerprint sensor, nestling it beneath the camera, rather than next to it. Some analysts also claim it’s ditched the horizontal camera configuration found on the Galaxy Note 8, in favour of a vertical one à la Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.” Trusted Reviews

“There has been some chatter claiming that Samsung is toying with a couple of camera enhancements, including the introduction of a variable aperture that lets users control the amount of light that enters the sensor, in order to take better pictures in low-light environments.” Trusted Reviews

“We'd expect the dual-camera setup to be the same format as the Note 8 with one telephoto lens and one wide-angle, as well as a similar camera to of S9+, which has a variable f/1.5 - f/2.4 aperture. We know from leaks that the rear cameras will both be 12 megapixel units with optical image stabilisation on both lenses.” Pocket-lint

“The handset will come with an all-new S Pen that has Bluetooth on board, with a view to offering users the option to use it as a remote trigger for taking pictures and controlling music playback from afar.” Trusted Reviews

“Our sources say new Bluetooth support will allow it to perform additional functions such as controlling the selfie camera and music playback, plus the ability to make calls. As usual, its precision will likely also be refined.” Tech Advisor

Other features

“Other details include a 3.5mm headphone port, USB-C port, speaker grille, S Pen silo and microphone on the bottom edge, slim bezels (but no notch) on the front, power and volume buttons on the left edge and a Bixby button on the right. It's also claimed that the device will be dust and water resistant, which isn't a surprise as all of Samsung's top-end handsets have this.” Tech Radar

Under the hood

“There's also been talk…that Samsung could push the top configuration up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.” Tech Radar

“The latest bit of spec-related news to break concerns the phone's battery, which will reportedly see an increase from 3,300 mAh to 4,000 mAh.” Tom’s Guide

“One source has said the device could have a 3,850mAh battery, which would be a lot bigger than the 3,300mAh one in the Note 8, but only slightly larger than the 3,500mAh one in the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, so it's believable.” Tech Radar

“The next Galaxy will come with a next-generation version of the company's artificial intelligence features… The features will be baked into Bixby 2.0, which will debut.” Tom’s Guide

Excited yet?

So, if the rumours are to be believed, we’re looking at some serious spec on this phone. A great camera, long-life battery, improved S-Pen and a nice big display. There’s not long to wait until the next Galaxy makes its debut. Watch this space, and tell us in the comments what you’re most excited about.
