What is Google Duo?

Google releases new video-calling service for Android and iOS

You may have noticed a bit of online hype around Google’s new video-calling app, Duo. But what makes it so great? Why has it edged Pokémon Go out of the app store’s top slot, and why is Google releasing yet another communication app?

We have all the answers to your questions...

What does Google Duo actually do?

The beauty of Google Duo lies with its simplicity - it’s not trying to be more than one thing at once. It’s a mobile video calling service for your smartphone or tablet that works on both Android and iOS.

It doesn’t require you to setup a Gmail account, your mobile number will do just nicely, and it’s end-to-end encrypted. So all of your conversations stay between you and the person you’re talking to – unlike Skype and Facebook Messenger.

How is it different to Hangouts

Google Hangouts lets you do quite a bit of stuff. You have the options to message, call, and video chat all within one app - which is great, but it’s solely available to Android users. And while iPhone has FaceTime and Messages, they too, aren’t cross-platform. Duo is bridging the gap between the two operating systems, and Google thinks it’ll make us fall in love with video chat all over again.

Knock Knock…

No, it’s not a bad joke. Knock Knock is Google’s name for the preview you get before you answer a Duo call. If you start the call, you’ll see a preview of your face and a message telling you your video is visible.

Google thinks this feature will get you smiling even before you answer the call, making for a more exciting greeting.

Download Google Duo today from the Google Play Store and the App Store by following the links. And let us know what you think of the new app in the comments below.
