It's common practise now to use your fingerprint as a security measure on a smartphone but what could the tech do in the future?

What could the ultimate phone fingerprint scanner do?

We’re seeing an increasing number of mobile phones use a fingerprint scanner to boost security. We’re even seeing rumours about this year’s biggest phones like theSamsung Galaxy S5including one. Here are a few things we expect fingerprint scanner technologies to include in the not too distant future.

OPEN APPS FROM ANY SCREEN

We’re hoping so see fingerprint scanners used as shortcuts to launch apps. The HTC One Max does let you do this, but only from the lock screen. Imagine how useful it would be to open your favourite game just by placing a finger over the scanner. Here’s hoping it’s a feature included on the Samsung Galaxy S5.

CHANGE SETTINGS USING DIFFERENT FINGERS

How about turning your phone to silent with your ring finger? Or why not turn on or off the Wi-Fi with your left hand pinky? Super convenient and faster than having to get to the settings menu.

RING YOUR FAVOURITE CONTACTS

We’ve had shortcut keys on old phones, but it would be useful if a fingerprint could dial your best friend. You wouldn’t need to have shortcuts on your homescreen or swipe through multiple screens.

USE ALL YOUR FINGERS

As humans we have eight fingers and two thumbs, so why can’t we use all of them? The more fingerprints we can use, the more features manufacturers can build into their phones. It’ll also make it more secure. If one finger unlocks your phone, the same finger doesn’t want to be able to buy things. We want it to be hard for criminals!

MAKE SECURE PAYMENTS ONLINE

iPhone 5s lets you authorise purchases through the app store, but we want more. No more card numbers or PINSentry bank security devices, just a swipe of your finger to buy things on websites like eBay and Amazon.

MAKE SECURE PAYMENTS IN PERSON

Why stop at online purchases? Authorising card payments without a PIN, just your fingerprint, when you’re doing your weekly food shop would save time and make everything that little bit more secure.

PROTECT FILES ON YOUR PHONE

Sometimes you want to make sure individual files are secure on your phone. It would be great if you could use your fingerprint as a barrier to accessing sensitive documents. It’ll be brilliant when you lend your phone to kids. They can play games, but can’t open up files you don’t want them seeing.
