Twitter's blue tick now available to all

Anyone can get a blue tick

If you’re a Twitter user you’ll have noticed that certain accounts have blue ticks next to them. This denotes accounts verified by Twitter as being official and of genuine public interest. Out of 320 million monthly users, only 187,000 are verified.

In a nutshell - it’s a pretty big deal.

And now, in the year where seemingly anything can happen, you can apply for your very own. So why does this matter? And if everyone has one, isn’t that the same as everyone not having one?

Getting verified on Twitter

Not every Tom, Dick and Harry is going to be official. Twitter will still have a say in who, or what, it awards its blue ticks to.

Those who want to be included will have to fill in an application form, which will be made available on the site soon. Applicants will then need to provide a verified phone number, email address and website address. And if Twitter deems you worthy, you’ll be awarded your very own blue tick.

Bear in mind that Twitter is still looking for official, high quality accounts that will enlighten its users lives. It’s looking for "public figures and organisations in music, TV, film, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, sports, business, and other key interest areas".

Or, if all else fails, you can just cheat the game and create your own on Photoshop: BuzzFeed explores.
