Top smart gadgets of CES 2016

We’ve seen some weird and wonderful things at CES 2016, but in this article we’re looking at the technology we’d genuinely love in our homes.

Samsung Family Hub refrigerator

The four-door behemoth features a 21.5-inch touchscreen on the front, designed to allow you to look up recipes, browse the web, and maybe even catch up on your favourite Netflix series while pre-heating the oven.

Rather unsurprisingly, it comes with a pretty hefty price tag ($5,000, approximately £3,400), which could be better spent on a normal tablet and a fitted kitchen, but it certainly offers an insight into the future.

SCiO food scanner

Are you a calorie counter? Then this gizmo is for you. Simply scan your food, and the pocket-sized device will analyse your food by its chemical makeup. The on board near-infrared spectroscope will then help you understand exactly what you’re eating. Bon appétit.

LG roll-up display

LG’s roll-up display is a technology that’s very much in its infancy, but it could prove incredibly useful in the future. Although the OLED panel only measures in at 18-inches, LG’s confident that a 60-inch 4K telly is achievable by 2017. Read more about how it could change everything here.

HTC Vive Pre

Everyone has been so focused on the upcoming HTC Vive virtual reality headset, that we didn’t see a variant of it coming at all. HTC Vive Pre has a camera mounted on the front, which beams a picture of the room into your eyes.

This may seem a little backwards going forward, but hear us out. By being able to see the room you’re in, you’ll then be able to take advantage of augmented reality – a bit like Microsoft’s ‘mixed reality’ headset, HoloLens.

NRG Sunbook

The Sunbook is a ridiculously straightforward piece of kit, and something we can’t believe hasn’t made its way into the mainstream before. In its simplest form, it’s a portable foldout solar panel, which has a removable battery that can be used to charge your favourite tech.

By harnessing the sun’s energy, you can juice up on the move, and do planet Earth a favour in the process. After all, think about the polar bears.
