The weird and wonderful tech of IFA 2017

The stranger tech of the German tech conference

Europe’s largest tech conference is made up over 20 sprawling halls, brimming with the world’s most impressive consumer technology. Some of it is luxurious, some of it will already be on your Christmas list, and some it is… pretty bizarre. Here are some of our favourite weirdoes from IFA 2017.

The cute Baro bot sits on your desk and imitates your posture. The brains behind Baro think that if you can see yourself slouching, you’ll be more inclined to correct it quickly and sit up straight. Its face will also change colour based on how you’re sitting, giving you a quick cue to put those shoulders back and keep that chin up.

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean smart toothbrush

Philips’ new electric toothbrush is every dentist’s dream. It connects to a smartphone or tablet app, which guides you through a two-minute brushing schedule – highlighting where you need to brush, if you’re applying too much pressure, and which bits you’ve missed.

In the photo above, the golden parts haven’t seen enough brushing action, whereas the white parts signify the toothbrush is satisfied with your attempt.

Robot lawnmowers

Tired of having to tend to the garden when you could be doing literally anything else? If you’re nodding, you’ll be glad to know the tech world has a solution. Robotic lawnmowers were all over IFA, ready and waiting to wind their way in between your flowerbeds.

Prices range from a couple of hundred pounds, right into the thousands, depending the bot’s range, battery size, noise output, and how well it can tackle slopes.

Samsung Frame TV

Samsung’s Frame TV launched earlier this year in two large sizes, but a smaller 43-inch version was revealed at IFA. The minimalist telly is pretty much exactly what you would expect from its title – a super-thin screen is a glossy frame that wouldn’t look out of place in a Kensington art gallery.

It comes pre-loaded with 100 artworks, so it can double up as a painting when it’s not being watched. And when it is, you can expect pin sharp clarity from the 4K resolution.
