The LG G6 and its game-changing screen

Barcelona - The LG G6 has just been unveiled at MWC 2017. It’s the first premium smartphone of the year, and it’s got some fantastic features that have never been seen on a phone before. We managed to get our hands on it to give you a close-up look.

A bigger display, but not a bigger phone

"It’s the next-generation phone that consumers have been waiting for." LG president, Juno Cho.

The G6’s clever design gives you a bigger and better screen, without a bigger phone.

The stunning looking 5.7-inch Quad HD + Fullvision display reaches right down to the bottom of the LG G6. This makes it a taller screen than usual, with a rare 18:9 ratio (to visualise this, think of two boxes side-by-side. The vast majority of smartphone displays use the shorter 16:9 ratio). This is good news for anyone that enjoys watching films on their phone, as a lot of new movies and Netflix shows are shot in the same 18:9 ratio (or 2:1, as it’s also known). Here’s what LG president, Juno Cho, had to say about it:

“The LG G6 with FullVision was inspired by the philosophy of experts in the movie industry who believe that an 18:9 ratio screen would be the best solution for viewing both old and new cinematic content in the digital age.

“We’ve not only embraced that philosophy in our newest smartphone, but [have] taken it to a whole new level by incorporating the 18:9 format in many other ways. I think users will appreciate the many ways we’ve made the LG G6 more productive.”

This state-of-the-art display technology means there’s no room for a home button the front. It can now be found on the rear, doubling up as a fingerprint sensor.

Feature-packed cameras

The G6 has a dual-lens 13MP camera, capable of taking super wide-angle photos and shooting videos in Ultra HD resolution. There’s also a new shooting mode that fills the entire 18:9 display.

Another exciting camera feature that takes advantage of the G6’s tall display can be seen in this video – it’s a handy preview option that lets you take photos and review them at the same time.

And there’s great news for foodies that enjoy sharing photos of their meals on social media. The G6 has a ‘food mode’ that adds saturation and colour to culinary photographs, making them instant Instagram classics.

Under the hood

The G6 has a powerful Snapdragon 821 processor and 6GB RAM to keep everything up to speed. It comes with 32GB of internal storage and uses Google’s latest software, Android 7.0 Nougat.

The G6 is also dust and water-resistant, with an IP68 rating. That’s the highest mobile certification, meaning it can be immersed in water at depths of up to 1.5m for a good half hour.
