Samsung Galaxy Core Prime vs Galaxy Fame

How much do you get for your money in 2015?
Samsung Galaxy Core Prime vs Galaxy Fame

Two years ago Samsung’s new budget phone was the Galaxy Fame, a compact mobile that offered a lot for around £8/month. But things move quickly in the mobile world and now Samsung’s best value phone is the hugely upgraded Samsung Galaxy Core Prime. So let’s see what’s changed in such a short space of time.

A modern design

Samsung’s design ethos has changed completely since the Fame was released. While the old phone looked like a miniature Galaxy S3 (with corners so rounded it was almost egg-shaped), the Core Prime looks like the modern Galaxy S5.

Its square corners and sharp edges look really good, and we love that Samsung’s cut the empty space around the screen – it’s much more minimalist. It’s also around 25% thinner, so fits more comfortably in your hand despite the screen being a full inch bigger.

A new screen

That screen isn’t just bigger, it’s better in every single way. The resolution has been increased significantly, so the Core Prime shows more detail in movies and games, and text looks more defined online. The screen also shows more colours – 16 million compared to 256,000 – so everything you do looks more vibrant and lifelike.

Away from the headline specs, we found that Samsung has pushed up the brightness on the Core Prime, making it easier to see in bright light. And the new display is a lot more responsive, so it’s less frustrating to use. We really couldn’t be happier with the work Samsung’s done on its budget screen.

An improved camera

When you turn the Core Prime over, you would be forgiven for thinking Samsung has been lazy with the camera as it still has a 5MP sensor. But this is a whole new 5MP camera that takes brighter, more colourful and sharper photos. It’s also capable of recording in HD, whereas the Galaxy Fame could only manage standard definition.

Round the front, the selfie camera has been upgraded from VGA (0.3MP) to 2MP. Whether you’re shooting selfies or on a video call, there really is no comparison between the two.

Under the hood

The Fame’s battery isn’t any competition either. The one in the Core Prime is more than 50% bigger and can last more than twice as long – Samsung’s official talk time for the new phone is 13 hours, compared to 6 hours for the old one. That’ll be a relief to all of us who don’t want to carry a charger and our phone everywhere.

That longer battery life hasn’t come at the cost of any power. In fact, the Core Prime is significantly faster than the Fame. Its new processor can do more things at once and run bigger, better apps more smoothly. And when you go online, there’s now 4G mobile internet to load things up to five times faster.

Our verdict

Two short years have transformed Samsung’s budget smartphone. Every part of the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime is a huge upgrade on the Galaxy Fame that came before it, and that means you get a lot for your money in 2015.
