Nexus 5X vs Nexus 5

New kid on the block

The Nexus 5X is the new phone designed by Google and LG to give the ultimate Android experience. But have they succeeded? Let’s see how the Nexus 5X compares to the last phone these two created together, the Nexus 5.

Design & display

As soon as you look at these two phones side by side, you can tell which is the new kid on the block. Although both phones have the same smooth polycarbonate body, the Nexus 5X is bigger and squarer, yet sleeker at the same time. The addition of dual front-facing speakers make a difference too, giving it a slightly more premium and modern look and feel than the old Nexus 5.

The Nexus 5X boasts a 5.2-inch Full HD screen. This is exactly the same resolution as the Nexus 5 (although the new screen is very slightly bigger), so both look equally impressive.

Camera

There’s a camera hump on the back of the Nexus 5X, hinting that LG has fixed the Nexus 5’s greatest weakness.

And it has. The 12.3MP camera on the Nexus 5X has a much higher resolution than the Nexus 5’s 8MP. Not only that, the Nexus 5X uses laser autofocus and has bigger pixels than most phones, so it should perform better in low-light conditions. In short, the Nexus 5X takes massively better photos - some of the best you can take with a phone.

Performance

We know that a lot of Nexus 5 owners wanted to see an improvement on battery life, so we’re pleased to see that the Nexus 5X has an impressive 2,700 mAh battery on board. And it’s not just about size - the Nexus 5X runs the latest Android Marshmallow software and has a more efficient processor, improving its battery life even more.

Speaking of Android Marshmallow, it brings a lot to the Nexus 5X. Our favourite feature is Google Now on Tap, which can quickly give you loads of relevant information on anything you’re looking at. So if you’re watching a movie trailer on YouTube, simply press and hold the home button to get release dates, cinema listings, cast information, film trivia and more.

There are lots of other little improvements to the Nexus 5X like the easier to use, faster USB type-C charging port, faster Bluetooth and 4K video recording.

As you can see, we think the Nexus 5X really is a major upgrade to the Nexus 5, and we’ve loved spending some time with it. If you’re interested in getting your hands on one, find out more here.
