MWC: Blackphone 2 launched

PRIVATE BY DESIGN

Silent Circle, a company that focuses on secure technology, announced Blackphone 2 – the most private way of staying in touch.

Last year, after Edward Snowdon lifted the lid on how the US and UK governments were spying on all of our phones, the Blackphone was launched as a super secure way to stay in touch.

Now, a new, more premium, Blackphone 2 has been announced that adds high-end hardware to the security savvy software.

BlackPhone 2 completely overhauls the look and feel of the original Blackphone. Instead of a plastic back cover, there’s now Gorilla Glass covering a metal body. The screen’s also much bigger now at 5.5-inches, although the phone isn’t too big to hold in one hand thanks to its slim design.

Silent Circle has kept the PrivateOS software the same, so you’ll still get the Silent suite of apps for encrypted communication and the ability to have a secure private profile and a more open one for everyday use.

GOING AGAINST THE GRAIN

Silent Circle’s Mike Janke said: “While the rest of the market is going one way, with selfie sticks and curved screens, we’re going down another, to the heart of problems, sticking with privacy and security.”

Another big addition to the Blackphone 2 is a microSD card slot so you can expand the phone’s memory. When you plug your memory card into the phone, it’ll automatically be encrypted for added security. There’s also a new 13MP camera on the back for sharper photos, while the front-facing selfie camera has stuck at a decent 5MP.

Inside, everything’s been upgraded. There’s a new octa-core processor to make things run more smoothly, a bigger battery to keep you going for longer and more RAM so you can multitask without having the Blackphone 2 slow down. The Blackphone 2 will be available this summer, but prices are still unknown.

Will the mix of premium design and super secure software be enough to tempt users away from the Apples and Samsungs out there? For up to the minute news from Mobile World Congress, keep it with The Lowdown.
