MWC 2019: The Huawei Mate X foldable phone

We’re here at MWC 2019, where Huawei has just unveiled its first foldable phone and set out its future plans for running the highly-anticipated 5G network on its future devices.

Foldable phones seem to be popping up all over the place but so far, most of them have been delicate prototypes. Well, Huawei just confirmed that their first foldable phone is finally here - and we won't have to wait long to get our hands on it.

At Huawei’s MWC event on Sunday 24th February Huawei CEO, Richard Yu, wowed the crowd with the company’s first ever foldable phone, and it was a real feat to witness.

Huawei Mate X – the world’s fastest foldable 5G phone

We’ve seen a few prototype foldable phones recently, but this one of the first that's actually ready for market and due for release soon.

The phone features what Huawei calls a FullView display, inside and out. When it’s folded, the front of the phone measures a generous 6.6-inches, while the back measures an equally impressive 6.38-inches. Unfold the phone and you’ve got an 8-inch tablet.

The Mate X truly offers the best of all worlds. It’s a regular smartphone when you want it to be, but when you want to catch up on your favourite Netflix show, just fold it out and you’ve got the perfect device a TV binge - no seams or notches to spoil the view.

The patented hinge contains over 100 components to create a completely seamless fold and the ‘Falcon Wing Design’ delivers a true back-to-back fold with no gaps or odd shapes.

Side-by-side browsing - perfect for multitasking

Because the Mate X has so much screen space to play with, it’s perfect for switching between apps. Side-by-side browsing lets you drag an image or file from one open app to another.

When you’re taking a photo, you can even send the camera feed to the other side of the phone so the person in shot can see exactly what you’re seeing.

The future of technology is all about performance (and 5G)

It’s not all about the bendy design, this phone is packed with some serious tech.

For a start, it’s capable of offering 5G. And if you want numbers, Huawei says it’ll be able to offer download speeds of up to 4.6Gbps, that’s gigabits per second! At these sorts of speeds, Huawei says you’ll be able to download a “1GB movie in 3 seconds”.

On top of all that power, you get a long-lasting dual battery (one on either side). We’re not sure what that means in terms of how long it lasts yet, but at 4,500mAh, it’s likely you’ll be able to get well over a day’s use out of it before having to plug it in.

If the world’s fastest folding phone wasn’t enough, the Mate X also boasts the world’s fastest charging. It’s called SuperCharge and it gives you an 85% charge in just 30 minutes. And on a phone with two batteries, that’s seriously impressive.

The big question – when can I buy it?

Well, we know for certain it’s not just another prototype, but we can’t confirm an actual release date yet. Having said that, it seems highly likely that it’ll be available sometime this Summer.

One thing’s for sure, we can’t wait to take it for a test drive.
