Microsoft unveils Lumia 640 and 640 XL

THE THIRD & FOURTH REBRANDED LUMIA SMARTPHONES FROM MICROSOFT

In the depths of Mobile World Congress, Microsoft has unveiled two new smartphones, the Lumia 640 and a larger version, the 640 XL.

The new Lumias feel really premium despite theplastic shell, with sharp-cut corners and no protruding bumps on the back (like the Lumia 535’s camera lump).

Round the front of the 640 there’s a 5-inch HD display, which is clear and bright while blacks look really deep. There’s also a front-facing camera in the top left hand corner now where the 640’s predecessor, the Nokia Lumia 630, has an empty space.

Other specs include an 8MP camera on the rear, 2,500mAh battery, and a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, all running on the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system.

We should also point out that there’s only 8GB of internal memory, but if that sounds insufficient there’s space for 128GB microSD card hidden under the rear cover.

Sadly, only certain aspects of the 640have seen improvement when compared to the 630. The processor, main camera and internal memory have all remaining unchanged, but the boost in screen size is a healthy move, and a bigger battery means more time away from the wall.

There are a few differences with the 640 XL, with a 3,000mAh battery, 5.7-inch display and a 13MP camera, however the processor and RAM remain the same.

WHAT NEXT?

It seems bizarre that Microsoft hasn’t taken this opportunity to launch a new flagship with the world’s media watching, but we expect this will be coming soon at a personal event where the American company will have more control.

The Nokia Lumia 930 has been at the top of the Lumia tree for a while now, and we can’t wait to see where Microsoft will take the Lumia brand next.

If you have any questions about the new Lumia, drop us a comment and we’ll get back to you. In the mean time, we’ll be bringing you all the latest news from MWC, so stay tuned.
