Windows 10 comes to mobile, and it doesn’t cost the Earth
We’ve got our hands on the Microsoft Lumia 550, and we can’t get over how much mobile you’re getting for the price tag.
For starters, it’s running the brand new operating system, Windows 10 – just like the flagship Lumia 950. It’s been a long time coming to mobile, but it’s finally here, and it’s been worth the wait. But before we get into that, let’s talk hardware...
The first thing you’ll notice on picking up the phone is its surprisingly light weight - just 141g. This has a lot to do with its removable plastic cover, which reveals the battery, SIM and microSD input.
Round the front there’s a 4.7-inch HD display, which will give you an idea of the overall size, fitting comfortably in the palm and pocket.
On the rear we’ve got a 5MP camera, which we’ve found to be very capable. Like most phones, there’s a little loss of resolution when zoomed in, but nothing to write home about. Images are bright and colour representation is really accurate.
Inside, a 1.1GHz quad-core processor is running the show, which will happily keep everything running smoothly, even if you’re doing a few different things at once.
The new look
As we said above, Windows 10 is a big shout on this budget smartphone. On the face of it, the Live Tiles have seen some tweaks, meaning they’re now translucent allowing your background image to shine through. The Action Centre and Setting menu has also been tidied up, making navigation much easier.
Cortana, Windows’ personal assistant, is still present, but she’s now built into more apps meaning you can request backup from anywhere with a quick “Hey, Cortana”.
Finally, we want to give the brand new web browser a nod – Microsoft Edge. Its best feature lets you strip down ad-filled articles so that you just see the important stuff, and don’t get distracted by annoying sponsored messages or pop-ups.
