Meet the Cortana-powered thermostat

GLAS by Johnson Controls and Microsoft

Not to be outdone by Hive and Google, Microsoft has entered the smart thermostat arena with GLAS. Although there’s no price tag attached to the new product yet, we do have a promo video from Microsoft, which gives us a pretty good look. Check it out:

What does it do?

What it does, is look great. The translucent glass touchscreen looks like something out of Blade Runner, and the Microsoft UI seems to be very intuitive and easy to use. It will run on Microsoft’s Windows 10 IoT Core OS, and Cortana will be waiting in the wings to help out with vocal commands.

Microsoft plans to role out its Core OS to other IoT-connected devices, like fridges and TVs in the near future. Presumably in an effort to keep up with the likes of Google’s Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa, and Samsung’s Bixby, which are all making their way into our homes through smart tech.

Microsoft claims the system can detect when you’re home, and when you’re out, through a series of sensors. This means it’ll save energy by not putting the heating on when you don’t need it. And it’ll monitor the air quality, both inside and outside your home.

According to the video, the system is designed for both home and business use, and there’s no word at the moment on whether it’ll be launching in the US or UK, but fingers crossed for the latter.

That leaves the question of when we’ll be able to use GLAS, but hopefully we won’t be waiting to long. We’d put our money on CES 2018, held in January in Las Vegas, for more info.
