Firstly, let’s take a look at the regular P30, before we delve into the extra features you get from the P30 Pro…
The main camera on the P30 has a triple lens setup. You get a 40MP wide-angle lens, a 16MP ultra-wide lens, and an 8MP telephoto zoom lens. And, with all this tech working together, you’re able to get some truly jaw-dropping results.
If you thought the camera on last year’s P20 was impressive (we certainly did), prepare to be blown away by some of the huge improvements Huawei has made with the P30.
The P30’s incredible zoom capabilities
The zoom capability has increased from 3x optical zoom, to 5x optical zoom with a 10x lossless zoom feature built right into the processor.
Huawei has managed to squeeze in a 5x optical zoom using a very clever ‘periscope’ system. The lenses are stacked sideways, with light reflected into the lens using a 90-degree prism. This is how the P30 is able to deliver such impressive levels of zoom from a phone that’s only 7.6mm thick.
The 10x lossless zoom is a hybrid feature that combines the optical five lens system with some very clever processing trickery. When you take photos using this option, the phone digitally zooms in, then sharpens the image to give you something that you wouldn’t think possible in a phone. 10x zoom photos take a second or two longer to process, but the results are totally worth it.
Using the zoom feature is really straightforward. When you’re in camera mode, just choose 1x, 5x, or 10x at the bottom of the screen to switch between the different options.
The P30 has a whole new way of capturing light
Practically all cameras found in smartphones use an RGB sensor, this means it captures light from the red, green and blue spectrums. But, the Huawei P30 uses a unique RYYB (Red, Yellow, Yellow, Blue) sensor, which can capture much more information from your scene.
This new approach to the light sensor means you get more detail from every kind of scene, but it’s the low-light images where you really notice the difference. Because the sensor can capture a lot more detail, night-time shots look natural, with vibrant colours and accurate lighting.
A better bokeh effect from the P30 Pro
The bokeh effect is when the subject of your picture is in perfect focus but the foreground or background is out of focus. This sort of effect can really make an object pop out of the picture making, it look like the photo was taken by a professional with an expensive DSLR camera.
The P30 Pro has an extra ToF (Time of Flight) sensor that’s able to detect the distance of objects in your whole scene. The powerful processor goes to work on your image, making sure your subject stands out in super sharp focus.
Selfies just got better thanks to AI
That’s right, Huawei added AI to the P30’s selfie camera - so the phone automatically adjusts its settings based on the environment in your scene. So, if you’ve got your back to the sun, it’ll make sure your face is still well lit.
Super-stable video, even at full zoom
If you love to shoot video, the P30 pro is the one for you. Huawei has added a few new features to the video mode that really help you shoot amazing movies.
Both the 5x optical zoom and the 10x hybrid zoom are great at keeping your subject in focus, and the P30 comes with dual Optical Image Stabilisation to keep all of your video looking super smooth.
