IFA 2015: Internet of things

Today is press day at IFA, and we’re on the ground to get up close and personal with the latest tech. We’ve been looking at the internet of things, the system of connected devices that will also talk to your smartphone, in an effort to make life that bit easier.

News from Philips

At Philips’ press announcement we saw a new Bluetooth enabled razor which feeds back information to your smartphone to make sure you not only get the best shave, but continue to do so. The razor learns about your shaving style, and collects the data to allow you to avoid shave burn and skin irritation.

We’ve also had a chance the see a kitchen appliance called the Multicooker, which takes all the pains out of making tasty meals. Simply select which recipe you want to make, and the device will talk you through how it’s done, reminding you when you need to add the next ingredient.

LG spearheading the smart home movement

Over at LG we were treated to a wealth of cool tech that will come in handy around the connected home. Among some of the highlights was a Wi-Fi enabled security tag that knows when doors or windows have been opened, and will send alert to your smartphone.

If you’re not in the house to do anything about it, or more worryingly, aren’t expecting the intrusion, you can call upon the services of your live-in security guard, Hombot.

Hombot has a smartphone-operated camera on board, which you can access and control through an app from anywhere in the world. If that’s not enough, it will also do the vacuuming for you, too.

Finally we experience the smart fridge, which was really cool (sorry). A lot of manufacturers are fixated on creating technology that will notify you when you’re running low on the stuff you use the most. However, LG’s solution is a much simpler one, which a live video stream you can access from anywhere.

So, if you’re down at the shops and can’t remember if the kids finished off the OJ, you can log in and find out in real time.

Coming up next - Samsung

It also looks like we can expect some big things from Samsung on the internet of things front with this teaser trailer.

Find out more tomorrow, where we’ll be spending some time with Samsung new smartwatch, the Gear S2.
