How smart can a coffee machine be?

The internet of things (IoT) promises to make life effortless by letting your gadgets talk to each other. Imagine your fridge knowing what’s in it, coming up with a recipe and telling your oven to pre-heat, all in time for dinner.

This might be beyond the capabilities of our current connected gadgets, but the IoT that we have now is already pretty impressive.

This year we’ve seen the world’s first Wi-Fi coffee machine unveiled by London tech firm Smarter. The Smarter Coffee is able to brew you a fresh cup of joe every morning before sending an alarm to your phone to wake you up and tell you that your coffee’s ready.

Its app also gives you options to fine tune your coffee to your particular tastes, making it stronger, hotter or just more of it for your massive mug. Because of the IoT, you’ll be woken up with the perfect cup of coffee every day.

The IoT doesn’t stop at coffee. Just in your kitchen you can now have a fridge, washing machine, oven, dishwasher and kettle connected to the internet so you can tell them to do things from anywhere through your smartphone.

But, as with the traditional internet, the current king of the IoT is Google. Its impressive Nest Learning Thermostat senses when you’re around, learns your habits and works out the most efficient way to keep you warm without you having to press a button.

As the IoT quickly matures over the next few years, more and more gadgets will do their jobs automatically like Nest. And before long there will be a standard way of them talking to each other so they can do even more. Let’s just hope they don’t develop their own willpower, no one wants a rebellious toaster.

Tell us what your ultimate internet of things gadget would be in the comments below.
