At the end of November Corning announced it was launching Gorilla Glass 4, the new and tougher version of its hardened glass that protects most phone and tablet screens.
But it turns out Gorilla Glass 4 was actually launched months ago. It’s always been protecting the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, which was released in August, and the Galaxy Note 4, which arrived in September.
That’s good news for everyone who picked up one of Samsung’s new metal-framed smartphones. Gorilla Glass 4 is supposed to survive drops twice as well as other toughened glass, so you can breathe a little easier the next time your Note 4 or Alpha slips out of your hand.
We expect most top smartphones in 2015 to come with Corning Gorilla Glass 4, but if you want a phone with a super-tough screen right now you’ll have to choose between the Note 4 and Alpha.
