APPS TO GET YOU MOVING

If you got an Android Wear smartwatch for Christmas, now’s the perfect time to get on top of your fitness. But that doesn’t have to mean joining the rush of January gym bunnies. You can get fit anywhere and everywhere.

Presumably, you’ve already given your smartwatch a go. You’ve inspected the various digital faces, marvelled at the fact that it can display your text messages and Facebook notifications (and everything else), but what’s that picture of a heart?
That, friends, is Google Fit.

Google Fit is built into all Android Wear devices and can track your heart rate, your fitness levels and your steps. You can set daily personal goals and up them as and when you need to. Perfect for motivating you to get off the sofa and into a pair of trainers.

But is it enough? If you’re not convinced, it might be time to look into Runtastic – the pinnacle of wearable fitness apps.

Runtastic has got to be the most comprehensive fitness app we’ve ever seen. Its popularity is more than justified, and that’s part of the reason it was one of the first apps to be optimised for Android Wear. There is both a free version and a paid version available from the Google Play store – the latter being priced at £4.99.

SO, WHAT DOES IT DO?

More like, ‘what doesn’t it do?’ During setup, Runtastic requires your height, weight, and all that other stuff you would come to expect from any nosey fitness app.

You’ll be invited to listen to various motivational speeches and mixes available within the app, and you’ll be updated periodically on your progress from one of the virtual coaches – we like Julia.

In the review section you can really tell your story. Imagine you’ve gone for a morning jog, and the crisp sun is just breaking through the still, low-hanging mist – got that image in your head? Runtastic invites you to capture the moment, and boast about it with a social media review. Attach things like your route, speed, and burned calories and before long, we’re sure you won’t be running your route alone.

Finally, if you’re looking for a challenger, but prefer your own company when training, you can challenge yourself based on your previous runs. What better way to build on that personal best?
