5G in the UK
Boris Johnson wants to introduce 5G technology, the next generation of mobile internet, to London within the next 5 years.
Known as 5G, this ultra-fast internet connection, which is still in development, should give speeds up to 10GBp/s. That’s around 1,000 times faster than the average UK home broadband speed, or fast enough to download a HD movie in less than a second.
As 5G is only just being tested by the world’s biggest technology companies, it seems a little ambitious of Boris Johnson to say London should roll out the new connection by 2020. Even South Korea, which has lead the way on 3G and 4G technology, plans to start testing 5G commercially in the early 2020s.
