Best smart tech for your Christmas list

Christmas is sneaking up on us once again. To make sure jolly old St. Nick and his elves can sort you out the right present, it’s time to work on your Christmas list. With that in mind, we’ve found the best smart tech gifts.

Sphero BB-8

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to be the Christmas blockbuster of the century. So what could be a more appropriate Christmas present than a Droid from the movie?

Sphero BB-8 is a replica of one of Star Wars’ more fun and friendly robots. It can recognise and react to your voice, developing its own personality the more you play with it, and can be driven from your phone like a remote-controlled car. BB-8 can even show virtual holographic videos, just like R2-D2 in A New Hope.

EE Action Camera

With a tough, small and lightweight design, plus the ability to broadcast live video over 4G, the EE Action Camera is the most advanced wearable camera we’ve seen.

A range of mounts let the EE Action Camera easily clip to your chest, a helmet or your bike so you’re always ready to record and share. It also comes with a smartwatch that acts as a viewfinder and remote control so it’s easy to use, even if it’s strapped to your head.

Livescribe 3 Pro Edition

With Livescribe 3 Pro Edition, your handwritten notes instantly appear as digital documents on your phone or tablet, making them easily searchable and editable.

All you do is write in a normal notebook. Then, the special Livescribe pen detects all your strokes and records them on your phone (the pen has an ink cartridge so you get a paper backup too). From there, you can use the Livescribe app to tag notes, convert them to text and search them. You can even use your notes to create reminders, tasks, contacts and more.

Parrot Flower Power

If you fancy yourself a bit of a gardener, the Parrot Flower Power could be your perfect Christmas gift. It’s a small sensor that you put in the soil next to your plants. It then sends you alerts when your plant needs something like water, light, warmth or a specific fertiliser.

The app that pairs to Flower Power has a database of over 7,000 plants so the little gadget knows exactly what your plant needs. It also has photos, general information and handy tips so you can make sure you’re giving it all the care it needs.

Deeper Fishfinder

Deeper Fishfinder brings some 21st Century tech to the ancient sport of fishing. Advanced sonar and temperature sensors send images to your phone so you find exactly where the fish are, and when they’re going to bite.

Despite being small enough to fit in your tackle box, Deeper Fishfinder packs sonar that’s accurate enough to identify the species of fish. And it gives clear images to a depth of 40 metres, so you can explore the bottom and find the best fish habitats.

Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi smart scales

Every year Christmas dinner is followed by January dieting. This year, keep on top of your festive snacking with the Fitbit Aria smart scales.

Fitbit Aria lets you track your weight, BMI, lean mass and body fat, displaying them all on easy-to-read graphs. That means when the diets do start next year, you’ll be able to track your progress more accurately.

Nest Cam

Home security has gone smart and now you can keep an eye on your home through your phone. With the Nest Cam, you get Full HD video of everything going on in a room and can keep it all backed up to the cloud for safe-keeping.

Nest Cam also has motion sensors built in, so you get alerts when something happens, and night vision. It really is a complete home security camera.

Philips Hue starter kit

Philips Hue will change the way you see light bulbs... seriously. Imagine being able to change the colour and brightness of your lights from your phone – maybe creating a cosy, warm atmosphere after you’ve opened your Christmas presents. That’s exactly what Hue lets you do.

There are some pre-defined settings for Hue that’ll help you get to sleep, wake up or feel motivated, or you can recreate scenes from your favourite photos (remember that sunset on the beach?). And because Hue is controlled from your phone, you can turn lights on and off from anywhere, which is great for security.

Samsung SmartThings starter kit

Have you ever dreamt of having a smart home - one of those proper ones from the movies where everything can be controlled from one simple pad? Well, that’s the idea behind Samsung SmartThings.

The starter kit comes with the SmartThings Hub as well as some SmartThings sensors. But it’s the Hub that’s the real key, as it can control other smart gadgets around your home, so not everything has to come from Samsung. That means you can have a complete smart home controlled from one app on your phone.

We hope we’ve given you some great gift ideas for your Christmas list. But if you’re looking for something else, check out our best smartphone for Christmas.
