Best apps on Google Play

The Google Play Store has more than a million apps and games just waiting to be downloaded. But with so many things for your mobile, you might be feeling overwhelmed. So to help you get started, here are some of the best.

PocketPocket

Pocket is the 21st Century equivalent of tearing something out of a magazine to show a friend or keep safe. It lets you clip almost anything you find on the internet so you can easily go back to it later, even when you’re offline.

Get Pocket from the Google Play Store.

Google DriveGoogle Drive

Another handy app for the internet age, Google Drive gives each of its users (there are almost a billion of them) 15GB of free cloud storage. That means you can keep files and photos safe and access them anywhere, anytime for free.

Get Google Drive from the Google Play Store.

PushbulletPushbullet

This is one of our favourite apps here at The Lowdown offices as it turns all your devices into one big happy family. With Pushbullet you can see phone notifications on your computer, easily move files from your computer to your phone and open and share links on different devices effortlessly.

Get Pushbullet from the Google Play Store.

Prey anti theftPrey

This useful app is like your own little device detective. Prey is an anti-theft app that lets you track where your phone is, sound an alarm and take pictures of whoever’s using it. What we really like, though, is that a free account lets you protect up to three devices so you can use Prey on your phone, tablet and laptop.

Get Prey from the Google Play Store.

TwilightTwilight

Did you know that staring at screens after dark actually messes up your sleep? Twilight tries to fix part of the problem by limiting the amount of blue light coming from your phone when you’re using it after sunset. Cutting the harsh blue light protects your eyes and tells your brain that it’s nearly time for bed, helping you get a better night’s sleep. Of course, you could just put your phone down in the evening, but who wants to do that?

Get Twilight from the Google Play Store.

7 minute workout7 Minute Workout

The mobile industry moves fast, so we at The Lowdown never have a spare hour to work out. That’s why 7 Minute Workout has been one of our favourite apps for a while. It walks you through a short but intense set of exercises designed to aid weight loss and improve cardiovascular function. And when you only have to find seven minutes in a day, procrastination becomes much harder.

Get 7 Minute Workout from The Google Play Store.

Sleep as AndroidSleep as Android

Sleep as Android is a smart alarm clock that wakes you up gently at the perfect moment in your sleep cycle (rather than in the middle of a dream) so you feel most rested. And with sleep tracking, you can find out how to get an even better night’s rest.

Get Sleep as Android from the Google Play Store.

Google TranslateGoogle Translate

Google Translate is a lifesaver when you’re on holiday. It does what it says on the tin, so uses the power of Google to translate stuff. It can speak 90 languages, translate speech, handwriting and printed text and even works offline.

Get Google Translate from the Google Play Store.

FacetuneFacetune

We all know that those models in magazines look completely different in real life, before they’ve been Photoshopped into unrealistically gorgeous examples of the human race. But with Facetune photo editor, you can give them a run for their money. It’s a simple but powerful tool for transforming selfies and portraits.

Get FaceTune from the Google Play Store.

Pic CollagePic Collage

Pic Collage isn’t an app we can ever see ourselves using, but it has over 80 million users so we’re clearly in the minority. It lets you combine photos, videos and more into creative collages that you can share with friends. You can even print your collages to turn them into greetings cards or postcards.

Get Pic Collage from the Google Play Store.
