Best apps and wearables for dogs

Today is National Dog Day, so to mark the occasion we’ve rounded up the best apps and wearables for them.
Best apps and wearables for dogs

When Florence and the Machine sang Dog Days Are Over back in 2009, she couldn’t have been more wrong. Despite Florence’s attempted meddling it’s National Dog Day today, Wednesday 26th August 2015.

We love our four-legged friends but it’s not always easy to look after them, which is why apps and wearables aimed at dog owners are growing in popularity. Let’s look at a few that can help you take better care of your canine.

Time for a W.A.L.K

iOS (FREE) / Android (FREE)

MapMyDogwalk is a useful app that can keep you and your dog fit at the same time. You can log your walks and favourite routes using GPS, and keep a record of distance, speed and calories burned. Plus, you can track your pace to make sure you’re always up to speed.

There’s also a ‘map pin’ feature to help you locate dog-friendly parks, water fountains and waste bag dispensers – very handy.

Taking the dog for a walk is good exercise for all concerned, and if you’ve put in a few miles we reckon you’re more than entitled to stop off somewhere for refreshments. Doggity will help you find dog-friendly cafes, restaurants and pubs where you and your dog will receive a warm welcome.

At the moment, Doggity seems geared towards London dog owners, with over 700 locations dotted around the capital. Other locations are less well-catered for, with only one single result showing up for Edinburgh, for example. Let’s hope that it catches on with dog owners throughout the UK.

Keeping your dog healthy

Pet Phone

Pet Phone is extremely useful app that lets you track your dog's health, and organise vital medical information so that’s it’s always at your fingertips.

You can record details of your dog’s vet appointments, medication, allergies and dietary requirements, and the app can also be synced with your calendar to give you important reminders.

Tracking your dog

The Scout5000 Smart Collar

Motorola’s Scout5000 Smart Collar is a fantastic piece of kit that can connect to your smartphone, with inbuilt Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. If you worry about losing your dog, you’ll love the fact that this collar features GPS tracking with 2 weeks of battery life.

Some of the other features packed into this smart collar include a pedometer, a hi-res camera, a microphone and a speaker. So you can see what your dog’s up to it and issue commands even when you’re miles away from it.

Just for fun…

GoPro Fetch

If you’ve ever wanted a dog’s-eye view of what your pet’s up to, this dog harness from action cam experts GoPro could be just what you – or rather, your dog – needs.

The camera (sold separately) can be attached to your dog’s chest or back, depending on the viewpoint you’re looking for. This is a tough harness, with a rugged build that can easily withstand all sorts of doggie rough and tumble.

The GOPRO Fetch Dog Harness is available from Currys
