Take chat to the next level

When Facebook decided to make its Messenger service a separate app, many didn’t see the need for yet another way to chat with friends. With WhatsApp (owned by Facebook too) already hugely popular, it seemed like a strange move for the Mountain View company. But there are some key differences between the two...

Mini video chat heads

For a while you’ve been able to video chat using Facebook Messenger, but now there’s integration with chat heads making it even easier to multitask. Chat heads are the little circles that appear on the side of your screen when you don’t fully close your conversations. And now they can host live video, too.

Basketball game

Looking to liven conversations up with your BFF? Send them a basketball emoji and tip off a quick game of hoops. Touch the ball to launch the game and see who can get the highest score.

Mute notifications

Have you been invited to a giant group chat you’re not really bothered about? You can mute the notifications so your phone isn’t constantly buzzing. Click the little ‘i’ in the top right hand corner, and select Notifications from the menu. You can turn them off for 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, or forever and ever.

Giant thumbs up

Sometimes Facebook’s iconic thumbs up, or ‘like’ button, doesn’t say enough. If you really want to illustrate your appreciation, hold down on the like button, and it will begin to inflate until you release it.

Share location

Let friends know exactly where you are by sharing your location. To do this you’ll need to have your GPS services turned on in your phone's settings, and then you can click the three dots at the right hand side of the keyboard, and chose Location. Perfect for busy festivals.

GIFs

By installing the GIPHY app in Messenger, you can share GIFs with your mates. If a picture tells a thousand words, how many does a looped clip if a super snoozy kitten? Too many to count.

Chatbots

This is fairly recent addition to the Messenger service, but you can now talk to companies directly. Chatbots are kind of like robots that can answer all your questions, in a (fairly) conversational manner. For example, a Skyscanner bot will help you find cheap flights. You simply tell it where you want to go and when, and it’ll trawl the internet to find you the best deal. All from the comfort of Facebook Messenger.
