6 ways Messages will change the way you text

The next iOS software update (due some time in the autumn) will include a whole range of exciting new features for the Messages app. Here are the ones we think you’ll have most fun with.

Write and draw with your finger

You’ll be able to handwrite entire messages or draw a quick sketch, using Digital Touch technology. You can also scrawl and doodle over images and videos to your heart’s content.

Emojify your messages

If you’re fed up with the time it takes to scroll through your emoji library to find the right one, you’ll like this feature. Messages will analyse your text, and suggest emojis for particular words. You’ll then be able to replace those words with the emojis with a single tap.

Oh, and if size matters to you – these new emojis will be three times larger than before if they're on a line of their own.

Launch your camera

Tapping the camera icon in the new Messages will bring up your camera roll, but even better – it’ll launch the camera. So you’ll be able to quickly snap a photo and share it straight away.

Reply without writing

The new TapBack feature lets you respond to a message by tapping and selecting an icon. So if time is short, you can now do better than replying with a boring ‘Ok’. The icons available include a heart, thumbs up, thumbs down, and lots more.

Add effects to bubbles

You can now add special effects to your chat bubbles, to give your messages a bit more personality. You can increase the size of your bubbles to make them more ‘shouty’, or you can dial down things and make them smaller than usual. We can see this coming in handy if you ever need to send a ‘sorry’ message.

Location, location, location

We’ll finish with a feature that’s so clever it’s almost spooky. If a friend sends you a message asking where you are, the app will recognise the phrase and suggest sending your current location as an automatic response. It doesn’t get easier than that.
