Is it possible to leave Facebook?

The internet is a big old place nowadays. Social media has quickly become one of the most popular destinations for users of all ages, and that’s not something that’s going to change anytime soon.

But what if you’re done with social media? Or maybe don’t have the time to keep up to date with multiple channels. As ever, The Lowdown is here to help.

Deactivating your Facebook account

First of all, deactivating your account is slightly different from a full-blown deletion. Deactivation will allow you to recover your account, should you ever want to come back. It basically takes you offline, but some information may still be visible to your mates, such as your name in their friend lists or messages you’ve sent in the past.

To do this, follow these steps:

  • Log into your Facebook account.
  • Click the drop down arrow in the top right hand corner.
  • Select ‘Settings’.
  • Select ‘Security’ on the far left.
  • Select ‘Deactivate your account’.

You’ll then be asked why you want to leave the wonderful Zuckerberg universe, and you’ll be reminded of how much you’ll be missed by all your friends. You get the idea.

Hit deactivate, and you can come back whenever you want. No drama.

Deleting your Facebook account

Now then, this is for the guys that really mean business. You’re not interested in deactivation - you’ve had enough, and you want out.

Before you do this however, you might want to download your Facebook life – photos, statuses, likes etc. You can easily do this by following this link. All the data will be emailed to you shortly afterwards.

  • Log into your account.
  • Head to the Facebook Help Centre. The easiest way to do this is to follow this link, after you’ve logged in.
  • Select ‘Manage your account’.
  • Select ‘Deactivating & deleting your accounts’.
  • Click ‘How do I permanently delete my account?’ and you’ll be given a couple of paragraphs to read through. At the end of the first one, click the link entitled ‘let us know.’

You’re pretty close to the point of no return now. You’ll be asked to enter your password, and then answer a question to prove you’re a real person, and not a virus or The Terminator.

The example we were given was: ‘Please select all of the photos which show a cat’. You can choose to do this with text or audio samples, too.

Before you leave, you might want to consider leaving a message for your friends, family and/or colleagues. Following your departure, they might wonder if you were ever real, or just a beautiful fragment of their imagination. Do the right thing and put their curiosity to bed.

And, that’s about all there is to it. Enjoy your freedom. If you have any questions, drop us a comment below.
