How to free up space on your phone

Running out of storage space on your phone means you might not be able to install the latest apps, or even save your photos.

It's easy to check how much storage you're using on your iPhone. Just go to Settings > General > Storage > iCloud Usage. This shows you how much space you've used and how much free space you’ve got left. You can also see what’s using the most space.

The amount of storage space you get on an Android phone can vary hugely depending on the phone, but it’s easy to check how much free storage you’ve got. Just go to Settings > Storage.

But don’t worry if your phone’s filling up fast – we’ve got a few tips to help you out.

Add a memory card

Most Android phones let you store pictures and videos on a MicroSD card, leaving your phone’s internal storage for your apps. You can get memory cards that will hold huge amounts of data. If you get a 256GB one, that’s enough to store over 100 full length HD movies, or more than 50,000 photos!

On some newer Android phones, you’ll also be able to store some apps on the memory card, but this does depend on the app itself. Here’s how to check: Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications, tap on the app you want to move, then choose Move to SD card. If you don’t see this option, it can’t be moved.Get yourself a MicroSD card

If you’ve got an iPhone, you won’t find a slot for a memory card, but you can use something like a SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive. Just plug it straight into your iPhone and you’ll be able to copy photos and videos straight onto the Flash Drive.

Delete unused apps

It’s well worth having an app clear-out every now and then. If your phone’s full of apps you don’t use, they don’t just take up valuable space, all those extra apps will start to affect your phone’s performance.

Don’t worry if you accidentally delete an app you’ve already paid for. You can always download it again for free.

Also, some apps like Facebook, Google Maps, and web browsers can save a lot of 'temporary files', which take up space. Go to Settings > Apps (or Applications) > Manage applications. Go into each one and choose 'Clear cache’ to remove these temporary files. You can also choose ‘Clear data’ but be careful, deleting the data will remove everything stored in the app like messages, or login details.

Use a cloud storage service

Cloud storage is the perfect solution for anyone who loves to take photos and videos. There are plenty to choose from but the most popular ones are Google Photos, Dropbox and iCloud.

When you download Google Photos or Dropbox, you’ll see an ‘Auto Backup’ option in the app settings. Turn this on and all your photos will automatically backup to your Google or Dropbox account.

If you’ve got an iPhone, you probably already use iCloud to backup your photos. If you’re not sure, you can check by going to Settings > iCloud > Photos and make sure iCloud Photo Library is switched on.
