How to choose the right power bank

There’s nothing worse than seeing the screen on your smartphone turn black, and realising you’re a long way from a charger. Especially during the festive season. If you’re heading out for New Year’s Eve, you’ll be wanting to take loads of photos of the celebrations, and make midnight calls to friends and family… So, why not take a power bank out with you as a back-up?

There are lots of power banks to choose from, so let us help you decide which one’s right for you…

What size of power bank do you need?

Not sure which size of power bank to go for? Don’t worry - it’s not too difficult to make the right choice.

All you really need to do is compare the size of your phone’s battery with the charger’s capacity. Both of these are measured in mAh (milliamp Hour). These numbers will tell you how many times the power bank will be able to charge your phone…

A 2,000mAh power bank will be enough to fully charge a phone with a 2,000mAh battery. A 4,000mAh power bank will be able to charge it twice over, and so on. So for example, if you’ve got a Galaxy S9 with a 3,000mAh battery, a 10,000mAh power bank will be able to charge it three times over and then some.

With all that in mind, we recommend that any power bank you buy should have at least as much capacity as your smartphone’s battery. If it doesn’t, you won’t be able to fully charge your phone with it.

What else should you think about when buying a power bank?

You should also check that your phone and power bank have the same types of charging ports. Some older power banks don’t support the newer USB Type-C charging, so that’ll be no good for you if your phone’s rocking a USB Type-C port.

Also, bear in mind that your power bank can charge other devices. If you got a new Nintendo Switch for Christmas, a 20,000mAh power bank will be enough to charge it three times over. That’ll give you around 9 hours of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild gameplay, you lucky thing.

What power banks are available?

We’ve got a great range of power banks at Carphone Warehouse, going up to 10,200mAh. If you’re looking for something even bigger, head to the Currys PC World website for power banks up to 20,100mAh.
