How to transfer my mobile number
You’ve got a new phone or SIM card but want to keep your old mobile number - that's not much to ask for, really, is it? Don’t worry, it’s a fairly simple process. Here’s everything you need to know about keeping your number when you change your contract or SIM card - even if you're joining a new network.
What do I need to keep my number?
You’ll need a PAC (Porting Authorisation Code - sometimes called a 'PAC code'). This is a number that lets you transfer your current number to your new SIM card. You need to get this from your current network.
Do I always need a PAC?
No, not always.
If you’re staying with your current network, you’ll need a PAC if you’re upgrading from a Pay As You Go (PAYG) deal to a Pay Monthly (contract) one. If you’re upgrading from one Pay Monthly contract to another, or upgrading from a PAYG phone to another, you don’t need a PAC. Your number will automatically be activated on your new SIM.
If you’re moving from one network to another, you’ll need a PAC.
How do I get my PAC code?
Call your current network and ask for your PAC. It’s free to get your PAC, and your network has to give you one within two days, or tell you why they can’t.
You need to get your PAC before you disconnect your old SIM. If you don’t, you won’t be able to transfer your number.
What do I do with my PAC?
When you’re buying your new phone, tell the in-store colleague, or the staff member on the other end of the phone, that you want to keep your number. They'll normally ask for your PAC then, so if you have it already, that will make everything move quicker. Your PAC is valid for 30 days, so you have plenty of time to use it, but try to use your PAC as soon as possible.
Can I use my PAC after I've bought my new phone?
Yes, you can, but not if you’ve bought a deal from Talkmobile as the PAC needs to be used at the checkout for this network.
For all other networks, call them up with your PAC code and they’ll be able to transfer your number to your new deal. Make sure you contact them before your SIM has been disconnected.
How long will it take to transfer my number?
Normally just two working days, but it can take a little longer in certain circumstances. If you give your PAC code to Carphone Warehouse, we’ll transfer your number within two working days of your new phone being connected. If you give your PAC code to your network, the amount of time it takes to transfer your number can vary.
