When it comes to Android phones, there are usually plenty of ways to get things done, thanks to the huge number of apps available through the Play Store - and video calling is no different.
The first thing you’ll need to do is download one of the many video-calling apps. So, let’s take a look at some of the best apps for video chat…
Google Duo
This is probably the most logical choice for Android users because it’s made by Google and already comes pre-installed on some phones.
Key features:
- Highest quality video-calling app
- Very easy to use
- Knock Knock feature lets you see your friends before you answer
The app is easy to set up and simple to use, plus Google claims that it offers the highest quality available in a video calling app.
To set it up, all you need to do is download Google Duo for Android from the Play Store (also available from iTunes for iPhone). Once downloaded, open the app.
When you first open the app, you’ll need to agree to the Terms of Service and you’ll also need to link your phone number. Once you’ve given permission for the app to access your contacts, you’ll be able to see which of your contacts are already using Duo.
Duo also comes with a handy feature called Knock Knock, which lets you see a caller’s video feed before you answer. Turning Knock Knock on also lets people you call see you before they answer.
WhatsApp
WhatsApp is one of the world’s most popular messaging services, with over 86 million users on Android alone. And for good reason – it’s really easy to use and you can share all sorts of files with it.
Key features:
- Uses your Wi-Fi or phone’s internet connection, so no call or message charges
- Set up group chats so you can easily stay in contact with people
- It’s more secure than other apps, with full end-to-end encryption
To get started, you’ll need to download WhatsApp from the Play Store (or download it from iTunes if you’re an iPhone user).
Once you’ve agreed to WhatsApp’s Terms of Service, you’ll need to pick your country and enter your phone number. Then, enter your name and pick a profile picture if you like and you’re done.
Starting a video call is simple, just open the contact you want to call and tap on the video camera icon at the top of the screen.
As long as you’ve got a good internet connection, video quality is generally very good with sound also coming through loud and clear.
Skype
Skype has been around for years and it’s a firm favourite for many. It’s a great app for communicating with people across different platforms.
Key features:
- Make video calls with anyone, whether they’re on PC, Mac, iPhone or Android
- Group video calls with up to 25 people
- Syncs with your phone’s SMS messages so you can view everything in one place
First, you’ll need to download Skype from the Play Store (or get the iPhone app from iTunes).
Skype isn’t quite as straightforward as other apps to set up. Once downloaded, you’ll need to create an account. It only takes a couple of minutes to add your details and you only need to do it once.
Once your account is set up, making video calls is easy. Just go to the “chat” section, pick a contact, then tap the video camera icon at the top of the screen.
So, that’s three of our favourite apps for making video calls but there are loads more to choose from. Let us know in the comments below which video-calling app is your favourite.
