YouTube Music launches to take on Spotify

Could video kill the radio star?
YouTube Music launches to take on Spotify

YouTube is taking on Spotify with a brand-new music offering coming soon to the UK. It’s called YouTube Music – a music streaming service offering access to not just audio tracks and playlists, but millions of music videos, personalised playlists and more.

But, is it really a Spotify killer? Let’s have a look at what YouTube Music has to offer…

What is YouTube Music?

The redesigned YouTube Music app makes it easier to access YouTube’s vast catalogue of music videos. That includes live performances, remixes, covers, and other music videos you won’t find anywhere else.

Sure, you can already watch videos online, but the YouTube hopes its new dedicated music app will make it easier to watch and listen whenever you want.

What makes it different from Spotify and other music services?

If you love watching music videos on the train, or in bed before hitting the hay, then you’ll probably love YouTube Music. The app puts video at the forefront of the listening (and watching) experience.

On top of music from your favourite artists, you can also watch amateur recordings and fan covers of your favourite songs, and you’ll find it easier to access exclusive YouTube performances and music documentaries.

YouTube Music covers all your favourite popular artists, and unknown gems waiting to be discovered. After all, Justin Bieber was discovered on YouTube.

Find that track you’ve been dying to listen to

YouTube Music promises to make it easier to find what you’re looking for, even if you don’t know the name of the song.

For example, you could type in ‘New Cardi B song 2018’, and it’ll pull up a list of new songs the artist has released so far this year. The most recent song will appear at the top of the search results.

A more personal music experience just for you

YouTube Music is like that old friend who just gets you and your music tastes. It’ll offer music recommendations based on the time of day, your location, and your listening habits.

Imagine firing up the app and being suggested motivational soundtracks to get your heart pumping next time you hit the gym. YouTube Music provides playlists tailored for every situation.

What if I don’t want to watch videos?

Don’t worry if you haven’t got time to watch videos. There will also be 50 million songs including audio-only clips. Another 20 million songs are from independent artists or fan covers.

How much will I have to fork out?

YouTube Music has already launched in the US with the choice of a free -ad-supported version, or a YouTube Music Premium tier costing from $7.99 per month. That’s around £6 per month in UK money.

When is it coming to the UK?

A UK release date hasn’t been announced yet, but it is coming. Sign up at the YouTube Music homepage to be notified when.

We’ll be sure to bring you more on YouTube Music once the service lands over here.
