Why we love the new Nokia 8110 4G

Have you heard? Nokia’s famous 8110 ‘banana’ phone is back, and it’s packed with new features. Say hello to the Nokia 8110 4G, because retro is the new modern. Read on to discover what makes it so different to the original, and why we love it.

It was made famous by Keanu Reeves

If the words ‘Nokia 8110’ rings any bells, it’s probably all down to a small film that came out in 1999, called The Matrix. It catapulted the original 8110 into phone folklore, after being used by main protagonist Neo, played by Hollywood actor, Keanu Reeves.

The phone used in the film was in fact a modified version, with a spring-loaded slider that popped out to reveal the keypad. However, that didn’t stop everyone wanting the real-life version at the time. Despite the absence of a springy slider, it was just as popular.

Now with speedy 4G

As much as we loved the original Nokia 8110, it wasn’t loaded with all the top features you get from the phones of today. The original model was released in 1996, so fast mobile internet wasn’t much of a thing back then, and neither was social media.

The new Nokia 8110 4G is way speedier, with nippy web browsing, so you can hit up your social media feeds to your heart’s content. Use apps such as Facebook, Google Maps, and more. You can also create your own Wi-Fi connection wherever you are. That’ll come in handy the next time you want to look up something on the internet in a hurry, or if the Wi-Fi in your local café is non-existent.

It now has a memory card slot

The ’96 model didn’t have a memory card slot either, and no real internal storage, besides space for your 125 contacts. Today, the latest 8110 4G has 4 GB of storage, which you bump up to 32 GB with the help of a microSD card. That’s more like it.

You could only get it in black back then

Back then you could only get the 8110 in black. Now you can be spoilt for choice, with a dashing yellow colour in tribute to its ‘banana phone’ nickname. Black is available too, so don’t worry if you prefer your phone to look more discreet.

Even Snake has changed

Say the word Nokia to anybody, and you can guarantee the mobile game Snake is one of the first things they think of. Snake is back, and it looks even better. The apple-chomping game has been given a new lease of life, with a fresh lick of paint and colourful graphics, while staying true to its appealing can’t-put-it-down gameplay.
