Why we love the Mate 20 Pro's camera

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro launched recently and it’s been a huge hit, with lots of new owners raving about its triple-lens AI camera. We were lucky enough to get our hands on one to see what all the fuss was about, so read on to see what we made of it. And please forgive us if we start raving about it…

It’s hip to be square

The Mate 20 Pro’s rear camera set-up gives it a completely unique look. You’re not going to mistake this phone for any other model, even from a distance. A rounded square contains all three lenses, with a flash at the top left corner. Displayed prominently above it is the name of the legendary lens maker ‘Leica’, just to remind you that this is the world’s first Leica triple camera.

And what about those three lenses? Well, the 40MP lens has a light fusion sensor to help you take bright and clear photos in low light. The 20MP secondary lens measures depth and gives you professional-looking blurred backgrounds, and the 8MP lens is for ultra wide-angle shots.

Okay, so that’s the introduction over with. Let’s try the camera out. Did we mention that it was powered by AI technology?

AI power

Before you start snapping away on your Mate 20 Pro, here’s a quick tip. You’ll want to use its AI recognition feature, but it isn’t turned on by default. So head into the camera settings, and toggle the ‘Master AI technology’ switch on. Easy.

Now when you point your camera at something, AI swings into action. It can recognise 1500 things, from autumn leaves to fireworks, and it’ll automatically adjust the camera settings to give you the best possible shot. Want to make your cat the next social superstar? Then just take a snap of it and let the AI go to work. It’ll make your cat’s fur full of incredible detail, and so fluffy you’ll want to stroke the picture. Post it on Instagram, and prepare for some serious likes.

The first shot we took was of an office building on a typically cloudy October day. Everything looks nice and sharp and the AI’s ‘cloud mode’ has bought out some detail that couldn’t be seen with the naked eye.

Let’s zoom right in

We then tapped the zoom icon on the display to use the 3x optical zoom. As you can see, it got us closer to the building with no loss of detail.

Another tap opens the 5x digital zoom, and this gave us a close-up that still looked incredibly sharp. Very impressive indeed.

One more tap takes you from the 5x digital zoom to ultra-wide 0.6x zoom – that’s the third lens we mentioned earlier. This mode actually lets you do two very different things. You can get eye-catching super wide images like this…

And you can also get right up close to something and shoot in macro mode. This gives you amazing looking close-ups from just 2.5cm away…

Good night

As we’ve already mentioned, the Mate 20 Pro is equipped with a lens dedicated to low-light photography. You’ll get clear and bright images even when daylight fades and the night draws in.

And there’s also a special Night mode if you want to get arty in the dark. This takes photos with a 6-second shutter speed and uses AI and image stabilisation to produce some breathtaking shots. Yes, it blurs things, but that can be an extremely cool effect when you get it right. Check out the image below to see what we mean.

Here’s one final tip that sounds a bit crazy – try using Night mode during the day and we promise that you’ll get some great shots. In fact, they look just like you’ve already applied one of your favourite Instagram filters to them.

Our verdict

We hope you enjoyed this round-up of the Mate 20 Pro’s main camera features. Could you tell how impressed we were? The camera’s combination of smarter-than-smart artificial intelligence and classic lens expertise really does produce spectacular results. Quite simply, it’s one of the best phone cameras we’ve ever tried – and probably the one we’ve had most fun with.

There are loads of other camera features that we didn’t get round to trying, like its 3D Panoramic and underwater modes, so if you own a Mate 20 Pro, feel free to share your own camera tips by commenting below.

If you’d like to get your hands on a Mate 20 Pro and try out its amazing camera for yourself, you can order it from Carphone Warehouse here.
