We’re back from IFA 2018 in Berlin, where we got to see some of the best new mobile tech due to launch this year. Here’s our pick of the best smartphones and smartwatches that we saw at the show.
Sony Xperia XZ3
Sony took to the stage on Thursday, 30 August to announce the Xperia XZ3. It’s a big-screen phone, built for immersive entertainment, and stunning photography. The XZ3 has plenty of cool features, but it’s the 6.1-inch OLED QLED glass screen with HDR screen that really stood out. It’s made using the same award-winning technology that Sony uses in its BRAVIA TV range. The result is TV-like picture quality, on a device you can fit in your pocket.
The photography skills are not to be sniffed at either, we’re talking about a dual 19MP + 13MP rear camera, and a front-facing 13MP camera, which according to Sony is the bee’s knees at taking selfies, thanks to a new range of beauty and bokeh effects. It’s a social media loving, movie-watching fan’s dream.
Fitbit Charge 3
Fitness trackers are becoming many things: more stylish, lighter, comfier to wear, and more feature-filled. Each of these can be applied to the new Fitbit Charge 3, which feels fabulous on the wrist compared to older models. The Charge 3 also has NFC built-in, so you can make contactless payments with it, and a longer battery life of up to seven days. Now that’s an update we can get behind.
Michael Kors Access Runway
Speaking of stylish wristwear, they don’t come much smarter than the new Michael Kors Access Runway range. Gone are the days when smartwatches and fitness trackers were something to hide away in shame under your shirt sleeve, today they’re gorgeous timepieces fit to wear to any fancy shindig.
Under the hood, the range is just as impressive. You get a heart rate monitor as standard, for your fitness tracking needs, and NFC for contactless payments using Google Pay, and a watch that’s swim-proof up to 30 metres. Naturally you can also peep at your smartphone notifications on your wrist, and store music on your watch, thanks to 4GB of storage.
Searching for a console-like gaming experience on your phone? Then keep a lookout for the Honor Play, which is a beast of smartphone. It’s designed for those who love to play games on-the-go. If that’s you, you’ll love the big 6.3-inch screen that gives a new lease of life to the best games, and your favourite movies and TV shows. Inside is a GPU Turbo Processor, which gives games a powerful graphics boost, and butter-smooth framerate. 3D sound tech adds extra immersion to audio when used with a headset.
Garmin Vivosmart 4
There were plenty of fitness trackers on show in Berlin, but we loved the personal touch offered by the Garmin Vivosmart 4. It has what Garmin describes as a Body Battery, which tells you when it’s the right time to exercise, or take a breather, based on personal information, such as how much sleep you’re getting.
There’s also a pulse oximeter, which measures the level of blood saturation in your body – which makes it useful for assessing your state of fitness when hiking up mountains at high altitudes. We’re talking serious fitness tracking, here. It looks pretty good, too.
Each of the above products have just launched, or will be very soon. Which are you most excited about? Let us know in the comments below.
