Meet the Samsung Galaxy S6 and its sensors

The S6th sense

The Samsung Galaxy S6 was one of our favourite smartphones of 2015, and it’s jam-packed with awesome sensors to make life that little bit easier. Since the Galaxy S5, there has been a big jump forward in the capabilities of this tech, some of which you mightn’t know about.

The biggest sensor update on the S6 was the fingerprint scanner, located inside the home button. Unlike the S5, which made you do a weird, slow motion stroke of the scanner, you simply have to rest your finger (or thumb) on the button for the S6 to be able to read it. It can recognise up to four prints.

There’s of course the heart rate monitor on the back of the S6 - which can do more than measure your pulse. With the help of the S Health app, you can track your stress levels and blood oxygen (SpO2), too.

But, what about these other sensors we mentioned? You probably already know all about the fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor, right?

The S6’s hidden sensors

  • Magnetometer: Aides navigation and operates the phone’s compass.
  • Barometer: Used to measure atmospheric pressure, allowing predictions in the weather.
  • Gyroscope: Allows your phone to orientate itself, depending on which way you’re holding it. Like when you watch a video and you flip it to landscape.
  • Thermometer: Determines the temperature, to keep you up to date on your surroundings.
  • Proximity: Allows the phone to detect when something is close to it, so it switches off the screen when you’re making or taking a call.
  • Accelerometer: This is for motion control and games - like when you tilt the phone to steer in driving games.
  • Light: This lets the phone adjust the screen brightness depending on your surroundings.
