First of all - what is IFA?
IFA stands for Internationale Funkausstellung, which translates to International Radio Show. It’s held annually in Berlin around the beginning of September (this year 1 - 6 Sept), and it gives the biggest tech companies in the world a chance to showcase all their new stuff.
We’ll be heading to IFA's Messe Berlin to keep you up to date on announcements from the likes of Sony, Samsung, Huawei and much more. So, make sure you stick with The Lowdown for all latest news. This is what we’re expecting…
For the past few years, Samsung has unveiled a new smartwatch in Berlin, and we don’t expect this year to be any different. Last year’s Gear S3 was amazing, and whatever the follow up will be called (we would assume the Gear S4), it’ll be set to continue the trend of innovation and all-premium build quality. Samsung's press invite leads with the message "your new normal".
IFA will also give its visitors a chance to get an upclose and personal with the Samsung Galaxy Note8, revealed on 23 August at the New York Unpacked press event.
The new smartphone features a 6.3-inch Quad HD infinity display, which is HDR. It also has a brand new dual lens 12MP camera, and re-regineered S Pen, with more than 4,000 levels of pressure sensitivity. The new smartphone is available at Carphone Warehouse now. Samsung will also, no doubt, take the opportunity to exhibit a load of smart home tech, owing to the design of the invitation, from brand new large-screen tellies to washing machines and fridges.
Sony announced its Xperia XZ Premium in February at Barcelona’s MWC, but that wasn’t the Japanese company’s 2017 flagship. All eyes are on IFA for the big reveal of what will be the follow up the Xperia XZ.
Rumours suggest the next smartphone will boast a 5.1-inch display with a pretty decent camera, as all Sony smartphones tend to. And a leak from smartphone tipster site, TechTastic, suggests the expected Sony will have the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, just like the Xperia XZ Premium and variants of Samsung’s Galaxy S8. All will be revealed at the end of the month.
A new smartphone is on the horizon from LG, with a recent invitation to its press conference at IFA leaving little to the imagination.
The invitation tells us that the long-rumoured LG V30 will be getting its own announcement in Berlin on 31 August. The South Korean company has also revealed a few specs, including what the camera’s aperture will be. Pocket-lint writes that LG has confirmed: “the V30 will have an f/1.6 aperture camera and a glass lens as part of the dual camera setup”, making the aperture larger than that of the Samsung Galaxy S8. Camera comparison coming soon.
Juno Cho, president of LG Mobile commented further, saying: "LG boasts an unrivaled heritage in smartphone photography and our decision to adopt glass in the V30 camera is specifically because this has traditionally been the realm of DSLRs.
"For the users whom the V series was designed, this kind of innovation is significant".
