Huawei Mate 20 Pro: what the critics think

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a stunning new phone that’s absolutely bursting with features. Everything about it screams premium, from the triple-lens Leica camera, to the whopping great 6.39-inch OLED screen.

We were lucky enough to attend its official launch, and came back mightily impressed. It seems others did, too. Here’s what the experts think of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Stunning design

“… the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is one of the most stunning handsets I’ve laid my eyes on. There’s curved edges on all eight sides, and the neat square that houses the three Leica camera lenses and flash makes this phone stand out…” Tom’s Guide

“The Mate 20 Pro has a curved OLED screen … that makes it very comfortable to hold. The whole product looks and feels top-end in its finish.” Pocket-lint

That giant screen

“… this is one of the best screens around, with slimmer borders than almost any other.” Stuff.tv

“… there's a huge amount of display space to dominate your point of view. And its OLED so it looks great, with deep blacks and popping colours.” Pocket-lint

“… when combined with the phone's HDR support, the display is capable of producing images of astonishing clarity and vibrance.” TechRadar

The awesome reverse charging technology

“… the coolest battery feature by far is Reverse Charging … you place another handset on top of this phone’s rear, as I did with the iPhone X, and it will start to juice up. That’s clever.” Tom’s Guide

The amazing Leica triple-lens camera

“… Huawei has tweaked the primary 40MP sensor to handle both RGB and monochrome modes. With this ultra-wide sensor and Huawei’s 3X fixed and 5X hybrid zoom, you can not only close in on any subject, but also pull out to get a much wider view, making the Mate 20 Pro the most versatile camera we’ve yet seen on a flagship smartphone.” TechRadar

“… the Mate 20 Pro has an ultra-wide-angle camera … this shoots at the full-frame camera equivalent focal length of 16mm, which means you can shoot large groups of people from up close without using panorama mode… image quality is every bit as good as it was with the Huawei P20 Pro. It’s exceptional in both good light and poor.” Expert Reviews

As quick as an Olympic sprinter

“The new processor allows for exceptional snappy general performance throughout the Mate 20 Pro's OS, and thanks to its machine learning smarts, the phone will feel at its quickest when running your most-used apps.” TechRadar

“… the most advanced processor seen in an Android … the Huawei Mate 20 Pro runs like a dream. Apps load quickly, parts of the interface are there as soon as you tap or swipe their way.” Stuff.tv

Belting battery power that lasts

“In our time with the device, we've gone a full 8-hour work day … and still had 79% battery left.” TechRadar

“… three days of solid usage … Welcome to the new, gold standard in smartphone battery life.” Financial Review

The verdict

“Easily the most advanced phone that Huawei has produced to date, the Mate 20 Pro is premium in every sense of the word … Based on our hands-on time with the device, it's clear that Huawei is on to a real winner with the Mate 20 Pro.” TechRadar

“The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a masterclass in how to push phone tech to its limits. It has the most tech-packed camera around, fits an almost unfeasible amount into what is a bafflingly compact frame and is also one of the best-looking phones around.” Stuff.tv

“… a stupendously good phone.” Expert Reviews

And that’s what the critics had to say, what do you reckon?

As you can see, we’re not the only ones who love the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. The experts do too.
