Huawei Mate 20 Pro hands on

Meet the Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Huawei has done it again by launching another quite excellent phone. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a photographer and movie-lover’s dream, with a big screen, extra-long battery power and features to make you go wow! Join us for a closer look…

Design and display

Let’s start with how the phone looks. And what a looker it is. The Mate 20 Pro comes in three colours: black, green and twilight - that last one looks glorious in the flesh – with a blueish purple sheen that shines brightly from any angle.

And that screen! What a screen. All 6.39-inches of its Full HD+ OLED display is just a joy for watching movies on. It’s just so big. As you can guess, we’ve been blown away by how amazing everything looks on it so far.

If you thought the screen was good, wait until you see the camera – which has left us well impressed. But first, those specs. On the rear you have a triple lens system with a 40MP (f/1.8) + 20MP (f/2.2) + 8MP (f/2.4) camera setup.

And on the front is a 24MP (f/2.0) camera. Together the front and rear cameras deliver excellent wide-angle shots, fantastic selfie options and great low-light photography. That front camera even has a depth sensor, so you can create those cool-looking blurred background shots.

Expect more impressions of the camera in the future, but we’re expecting landscape shots to look phenomenal. One feature that excited us greatly was macro photography – which lets you capture extraordinary close-up detail from just centimetres away.

Huawei’s clever AI technology can help you get the best shot by adjusting the camera settings according to your surroundings.

Under the hood

We’ve had a play around, and can confirm that performance is super quick on the Mate 20 Pro – that’s because it has Huawei’s Kirin 980 chip inside. The Octa-Core processor and 6GB RAM powers through everything – so you won’t have to close any of your apps to speed your phone up. It can run anything.

The battery power is another thing to gloat about. The 4,200Mah battery lasts all-day, and is as large as you’ll find anywhere. We also love the new feature called reverse charge, which lets you use the Mate 20 Pro to power up other devices. Your friends will thank you and be jealous at the same time. Amazing, right?

And finally, onto storage - the Mate 20 Pro has 128GB of the stuff for all your photos, movies and songs so you can enjoy all the things you love without worrying about running out of space.

Our verdict

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a beast of a phone, with impressive specs to match its size. This could end up being one of the best phones of the year.

Fancy it? You can order the Huawei Mate 20 Pro now in a range of colours, including green – which you can only get from Carphone Warehouse.
