How much iPhone storage do you need?

Are you thinking of upgrading to an awesome iPhone Xs or Xs Max? If so, you’ll be given a choice of three storage capacities - 64GB, 256GB or 512GB.

It’s really important that you get this decision right. If you choose less storage than you need, you might not be able to do all the usual things you enjoy - and if you’re constantly having to monitor your storage space and shuffle apps around, it can even be quite stressful. On the other hand, if you get a phone with more storage space than you need, you’ll be paying for something you don’t really use.

Not sure which storage option is the one for you? Need a little more information on what those capacities actually mean? Then read on, and we’ll do our best to guide you to the size that fits you the best.

Should I get an iPhone with 64GB storage capacity?

How do you entertain yourself? If you stream your favourite movies, TV shows and music rather than saving everything on your device, then an iPhone with 64GB storage capacity could well be enough. If you download dozens of games and apps you’ll still only use up around 10GB of storage space. So just as long as you’re not a massive game collector - and you only download the most popular apps - 64GB should be fine.

The Apple operating system also comes with lots of features that automatically frees up storage space. But even then, you should make a habit of deleting all those needless apps, and backing up your photos to iCloud Photo Library or a similar cloud-based service. If you do this regularly, you should always have enough storage space available on your 64GB iPhone.

Should I get an iPhone with 256GB storage capacity?

Are you a heavy gamer? Do you prefer storing your photos and favourite movies locally, on your trusty iPhone? Then 256GB could be the capacity for you.

With 256GB, you’ll be able to download any game you like the look of, without worrying too much about the size of it. Another big advantage of having this amount of storage space is that it’s easier to manage - you won’t have to constantly monitor everything or think about deleting apps that you can’t bear to be parted with.

Even if you’ve currently got a 64GB iPhone and think you’ve got enough storage, it could be worth going for 256GB when you upgrade to an iPhone Xs or Xs Max. Remember, apps and games are getting bigger all the time, so in a couple of years time you might really appreciate that extra space.

Should I get an iPhone with 512GB storage capacity?

Now we arrive at the largest storage capacity, a mammoth 512GB. This is the one for you if you want to carry around loads of content on your device itself. And there are a few good reasons that you might want to do this:

  • You’re a regular traveller and want your favourite content readily available.
  • You’re always shooting 4K videos and don’t like using the cloud.
  • You’re a power user that doesn’t want to worry about storage.

Are you one of those types of people? Or do you have another reason for storing a huge amount of stuff on your iPhone? Then go for 512GB and enjoy all that storage space.

So, have we given you enough advice to help you decide on your next iPhone’s storage capacity? If so, you can go ahead and order the iPhone Xs or Xs Max from Carphone Warehouse right now.
