The year in films: Find out what to watch tonight

We are a nation of film fanatics. Ask anyone what they did at the weekend - or last night for that matter - and chances are they were relaxing with a movie. And not just the one that was on TV that night – far from it, in fact. The latest figures from Ofcom revealed that eight in 10 adults in the UK use streaming services to watch TV and films, and, unsurprisingly, just over a third do it every week.

It’s streaming services – and faster internet speeds – that have completely transformed the way we watch films. They’ve brought mountains of free (and paid for) films and astounding network originals to our living rooms, making services like Netflix and Amazon Prime a must-have for anyone who likes the big (or perhaps more aptly, small) screen. And that’s everyone, isn’t it?

We’ve got access to so many films at our fingertips that naturally we’ve become more discerning in what we choose to watch. Using a smart TV, laptop, tablet or phone, we can search through several apps for the films we want according to genre, cast, ratings and recommendations.

But with the ability to watch what we want, wherever we want, and without the need for compromise, we’ve unknowingly created a new sport: The film-browsing marathon.

The search for the perfect film is over

With around 4,000 films to browse on Netflix, over 31,000 on Amazon Prime, plus countless more on iPlayer, Kodi, Hulu and Youtube, we can spend hours hunting down a movie to stream depending on our mood. Ironically, by increasing our access to top quality entertainment, we’ve also worsened the agony of choice.

According to a report by Freeview, we spend one year and four months of our lives searching for something to watch. That’s almost one minute deciding for every hour of our lives.

But we’ve found a way to buy back some of that time for you – at least for the next year – with our hand-picked, 365-strong catalogue of films. Our Massive Movie Calendar brings you what to watch today and every day of the coming year with ratings, trivia, and trailers.

When you click a date on the calendar, it picks a film that has a connection in some way to the day you watch it. Whether that’s…

The day it’s set, like Groundhog Day. After a bum weather prediction and a bad review of the local town, misanthropic weatherman, Phil, is doomed to do-over February 2nd until he puts it right.

A day that occurs in the film, like in Mean Girls, when Cady Heron works on her crush: 'I've been talking to Aaron more and more. On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was. "It's October 3rd."'

...or trivia for an important date connected to your film, like in the 1968 horror, Rosemary’s Baby. Rosemary is due to give birth on June 28, 1966. However, the film suggests the baby arrives three weeks early, making the birthdate 6/6/66: the number of the beast.

So, if you’re stuck for something to watch and need a little-focused inspiration, we’ve got all the reason you need to watch a great film, any night of the year.

Check out the Massive Movie Calendar right here. Enjoy.
