Nokia 8 arrives and introduces the bothie

Move over, selfies

Nokia has had a great year for smartphone releases, hitting the ground running under the new management of HMD Global. In February we saw the company unveil three pure Android smartphones, Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6, which were all met with a warm reception for their price tags, clean-cut builds, and impressive polarised displays.

There was also, of course, the grand return of the Nokia 3310, winning the hearts of many who enjoyed it the first time round, 17 years prior. But despite the fanfare, none of these four handsets were Nokia’s 2017 flagship product…

Nokia 8

The Nokia 8 is a shining example of what the Finnish company can really do, featuring a 5.3-inch Quad HD display, stunning aluminium design, and intelligent camera innovation. It’s also available to pre-order from Carphone Warehouse right now – follow this link to register your details.

What does bothie mean?

Before we talk about the specs, let’s address everyone’s number one question - what is a bothie? The Nokia 8 has a tool called Dual-Sight mode, which lets you take a photo or a video using the front and rear-facing lenses simultaneously.

This is called a bothie, in lieu of the single lens version, popularly known as the selfie. It’s also worth mentioning that you can broadcast live to Facebook with the Dual-Sight mode, which will be handy if you want to film your own reaction while filming something exciting.

The camera hardware itself is great. On the back you’ll find a dual lens 13MP Zeiss camera. You can use the lenses individually, or together, for different effects, including an impressive bokeh effect, which adds a professional-looking blur to the background of your shots.

And on the front there’s another 13MP lens, so whether you’re taking a selfie or a bothie, the quality will be great.

OZO spatial audio

When you’re recording 4K video, you’ll want the audio quality to match the visuals. Nokia uses OZO spatial 360-degree audio to make sure you can focus on the thing you’re recording, and cut out any background noise. So, if you’re filming an acoustic act on stage, and people are chatting in the audience, you’ll be able to hone in on the music, and lose the chatter.

Under the hood

The Nokia 8 is jam-packed with high quality tech, proving its worth against the competition. It runs on Android Nougat, has the latest Qualcomm processor, the Snapdragon 835, and a generous 4GB RAM. All this power will mean you’ll never be slowed down when using your favourite apps - gameplay will be smooth, and everything should load up in a flash.
