What a difference two years makes…
In March 2015 we welcomed the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge – lorded above most for its stunning dual-edged 5.1-inch display. But time moves quickly in the mobile industry, and now we have the Galaxy S8 – the new big kid on the playground.
So, if your S6 edge is due an upgrade, this is what you’ve got to look forward to…
Design and display
The Galaxy S8’s infinity display is the first thing you’ll notice about this new phone. It measures a staggering 5.8-inches, boasts Quad HD resolution, and it’s built with Gorilla Glass 5 for robust protection. The S8’s screen is 0.7-inches larger than the S6 edge’s, and most impressively – the handset hasn’t grown dramatically to accommodate it.
The infinity display occupies almost the entire face of the smartphone, flowing off the sides to subtly blend into the rest of the frame. There’s no doubt the S6 edge paved the way for the new design, but the rounded corners on the S8’s screen make all the difference.
There’s also no physical home button on the S8, but when the on-screen one is pressed, you get a little vibration to let you know it’s been activated.

The S6 edge featured a very impressive 16MP camera, which on paper sounds superior to the new S8’s 12MP sensor. However, the megapixel count on smartphone cameras these days is only half the battle.
The S8’s lens uses Samsung’s Dual Pixel technology, which essentially means that larger pixels inside the camera can suck in more light. And ultimately, more light means better, brighter photos. You’ll also be able to film in 4K and enjoy a number of Snapchat-like masks to share with friends.
The S8’s secondary lens is one of the first front-facing cameras to feature autofocus technology, keeping all your selfies looking pin sharp. At 8MP, it outweighs the S6 edge’s at 5MP, and it’ll do a great job of bringing your video chats up a notch - as it's now able to film in Quad HD resolution.
The S6 edge featured a very capable fingerprint scanner to make sure all your stuff was kept safe from prying eyes, but the S8 has gone one step further with an additional biometric level of security.
The iris scanner is positioned above the display, and scans the unique patterns in your eyes to let you unlock the phone with just a glance. It’s even more secure than using your finger or thumbprint, and it works really quickly.
Under the hood
The improvements aren’t just skin-deep with this smartphone. The new Snapdragon 835 processor is joined by 4GB RAM (compared to 3GB on the S6 edge) to keep everything moving smoothly. And there’s 64GB of internal storage as standard, with the option of adding a microSD card of up to 256GB.
Battery-wise, the cell capacity hasn't jumped up that much – from 2,600 to 3,000mAh, but the way it’s powered has. The new USB Type-C technology is on board, which lets you inject charge quicker than ever.
