First look at the HP Elite x3

The HP Elite x3 is the most powerful Windows Phone ever. In fact, HP says it’s more than just a phone – it can also be used as a desktop PC and laptop.

Design & display

The first thing you notice about the HP Elite x3 is its size. This is a huge phone. The display measures 5.96-inches, so it’s well into Phablet territory – phones that are almost tablet-size.

Even so, it’s surprisingly light and comfortable, and easy to hold in one hand. You'll definitely need to use both hands to operate it though.

The AMOLED display is really vibrant, with great colours and sharp contrast. And it should stay free from scratches, as it’s protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 – an incredibly tough surface.

There's a nice design touch at the bottom of the phone, where the speaker grille ends with a B&O logo.

That logo belongs to the Danish audio specialists Bang & Olufsen, whose stereo speakers are built into the HP Elite x3. As you'd expect, the sound is crisp and clear, even when we pushed it up to maximum volume.

Camera

The rear 16-megapixel camera comes with optical image stabilisation, so it’s capable of taking sharp, detailed images.

Round the front, there’s an 8-megapixel camera that actually captures two images at a time, and then combines them to create an HDR-quality image. This gives you more accurate light and shade, and will improve the quality of your video calls.

Under the hood

The HP Elite x3 comes with a USB Type-C cable for quicker charging. And this huge phone has a battery to match - it's a massive 4,150mAh, which should keep it running all day.

Under the hood, there's a high performance Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and 4GB RAM. That’s more than enough power for a phone, but remember, there's a reason for that - the HP Elite x3 is also capable of working as a desktop PC or laptop computer.

Turn it into a PC with Desk Dock...

To turn the HP Elite x3 into a PC, you’ll need the Desk Dock accessory. This uses the functionality of Continuum to beam your phone’s display onto a monitor or TV, and you can then hook up a mouse and keyboard for a full-on desktop experience. Best of all, Office apps like Word and Excel will be scaled up and be optimised for the larger screen. Check out this video to find out a little more about how Continuum works...

Turn it into a laptop with the Lap Dock...

To turn the HP Elite x3 into a laptop, you’ll need a Lap Dock (also known as a Mobile Extender). This is basically a Wi-Fi controlled laptop with a keyboard and trackpad, powered by the HP Elite x3.

When the Lap Dock is connected to the HP Elite x3 (either wirelessly over Wi-Fi, or with a USB Type-C connection) it'll give you a full Windows 10 laptop experience. Just like the Display Dock, it does this by using Continuum, so it'll optimise all your favourite Office apps.

If you’ve been impressed by the powerful HP Elite x3, it'll be available to buy from Carphone Warehouse shortly. In the meantime, feel free to drop us a line below and tell us what you think.
