The Angry Birds Movie is going to land in UK cinemas on Friday 13th May, as if you didn’t know already. To coincide with it, there’s a brand new Angry Birds game featuring the main characters from the movie. So if you really can’t wait to meet Red, Chuck, Bomb and Terence, you can download Angry Birds Action! for free on iOS and Android.
We’ve been frantically playing Angry Birds Action! for a few days in The Lowdown office, and this is what we made of it.
What’s Angry Birds Action! all about?
Angry Birds Action! is a bit of a departure from the traditional Angry Birds style of gameplay. Forget about pulling back a slingshot to fire your birds across the screen. This new game is more like a cross between pinball and crazy golf. You now flick your bird up the screen to try and collect eggs (or other items like sweets in later levels) in as few attempts as possible.
To add to the mayhem, you’ll encounter all sorts of obstacles like ice, wooden crates and wind machines that push you around. And if that wasn’t enough, a flying pig appears occasionally to drop even more crates that get in your way.
Meet the birds…
You’ve got four characters to help you out in Angry Birds Action!, and each one has different qualities.
Red is a general all-rounder that can blast obstacles to pieces.
Chuck’s all about speed, so you can use him to move quickly through challenges.
Bomb blows stuff up.
And then there’s Terence. He’s a bit of a wrecking ball, who just destroys everything.
What we liked about Angry Birds Action!
We like the fact that Angry Birds Action! allows features different characters with their own abilities. This gives it a little bit of depth.
And there are also occasional power-ups that do interesting things like freeze area and let our birds ‘ghost’ through barriers. Very nice.
We also like the sound of the mini-games and additional content that you can access by scanning secret codes, known as BirdCodes. Apparently there are over 1 billion of these BirdCodes dotted around the world, so look out for them in places like McDonald’s, Toys ‘R’ Us stores, Lego sets and even at the very end of The Angry Birds Movie.
What we didn’t like so much…
We’re not fans of the limited lives system that Angry Birds Action! You start with only three lives on your energy bar, and if you’re unlucky or unskilled enough to use them up, you’ll need to wait for them to recharge. You can watch a video to gain a life, but if you don’t want to do this you could be waiting for 45 minutes before you can play the game again.
Angry Birds Action! is a lot of fun, even if it is a little random at times. Luck seems to be involved a lot more in this game than in the previous Angry Birds outings. Perhaps because if this, it hasn’t given us that ‘just one more turn’ feeling. But if you’ve got young kids, we think they’ll love this game thanks to its fun characters, eye-meltingly colourful characters, and simple gameplay.
